Medical surgical nursing is one of the branches of
nursing which deals with care of adult. Medical surgical
nursing is the backbone of every institution. The changes
which occur in health care area reshape health care
delivery system and bring many changes and challenges
to nurses. The medical surgical nurses also need to
recognize these changes and prepared to face
challenges by acquiring knowledge and skills in specific
area to attain requisite competencies to deliver high-
quality care.

Current Trends & Issues in Healthcare
1- Robots in healthcare

2- Telehealth and COVID-19

3- Advanced technology for vital signs monitors

4- Infrared vein detection

5- Continuous glucose-monitoring (CGM) system

6- Wireless monitoring

7- Stem Cells: Innovations in Clinical Applications

1-Robots in Healthcare
The use of robots in healthcare is advancing rapidly from the
first robotic surgical assistant used in urology and expanding
across the surgical specialties such as gynecology, colorectal,
cardiology, and pediatrics. The researchers have introduced a
number of innovative enhancements to medical robotics to
improve the quality of care and assist patient care.
Examples of Robot In Egypt :
• National Cancer Institute, Cairo
University (Used in surgery)
2-Telehealth and COVID-19
Telehealth services use information and communication
technologies for the exchange of information between
patient and health professionals. Nurses are using
telehealth technologies in a variety of health care and
health education” through video and phone, remote
monitoring, and other electronic services.
3-New Technology for patient assessment and mentoring :

4-Infrared Vein Detection
Vein detection is an innovative technology that
assists healthcare professionals with finding the best
veins for IV starts and blood draws.
Benefits of using vein detection:
 Assists medical staff to locate find veins quickly
and accurately.
 Decreases patient’s fear and pain and improve
the quality of medical services.
 Helps to save time.
 Helps prevent repetitive and wrong injections.
5-Continuous glucose-monitoring (CGM) system

A CGM works through sensor inserted

under your skin on your arm for glucose
monitoring system with longer staying
inside the body (90 days) and monitoring
through Mobil apps for sharing reading
with physician and caregivers.
Benefits of a CGM:
• Need fewer finger sticks.
• Better manage your glucose levels.
6-Wireless patient monitoring
• Modern technology to enable monitoring of patients in hospitality
and outside of clinical settings (e.g. in the home), which may
increase access to care and decrease healthcare delivery costs.
• A wireless patient monitoring system to measure heartbeat, body
temperature & motion by using embedded technology. The specialist
staying at a distance can monitor the patient condition so that he can
save the life of the patient.
 The technology supporting Australia’s first ‘virtual hospital’, and will
be used to monitor COVID-19 patients in their homes, to help reduce
the surge capacity on the Australian healthcare system.
 We will also help to protect clinicians and medical staff by
allowing them to remain safely distanced from COVID-19
patients, while continuously observing vital signs.
 Beat by Beat” Blood Pressure, Respiration Rate and other vitals
are early indications of patient deterioration, So patient data to
all points of care viewable from anywhere in the world without
restricting patient mobility)
Research Findings / wireless patient monitoring

• Steinhubl et al. [2015] studied the use of a wearable, wireless

“Band-Aid” sensor to monitor patients exposed to the Ebola
virus.
• Sun et al. [2019] recommend using a microwave radar to capture
heart rate and respiratory rate to enhance the accuracy of mass
screening.
• Countries such as the USA and Australia have also harnessed
digital technology to provide remote care to patients with
chronic conditions or with mild or moderate COVID-19 illness in
their homes(Clark Medical Review, 2020).
7- Stem Cells: Innovations in Clinical Applications
Using Stem cell therapies have been expected
to bring substantial benefit in future for the
patients suffering stroke, as well stem cell
procedures are being used for blindness,
paralyzed patient, Alzheimer's disease and
COVID-19 pneumonia patients (Öztürk et
al.,2020). The main types of stem cell therapy
are umbilical cord stem cells and adult stem
cells.
II- New Trends in Education of Medical Surgical
Nursing.
 Problem Based Learning(PBL)
 E- learning/distance learning
 High-fidelity simulation
 Blended learning
 Mind Map & concept map.
Digital ,online or Electronic portfolio
1-Problem Based Learning
Problem-based learning (PBL) is a
student-centered approach in which
students learn about a subject by
working in groups to solve an open-
ended problem, while applying
knowledge to establish solutions. PBL
helps improve the quality of learning by
developing students’ reflective, critical
and collaborative skills.
B- New trends in Nursing education:

2- E- learning/Distance learning:
is an online system allow students and the teacher to
communicate effectively. Students can access their course
from their home, and how technology bridges that gap. Many
universities are now offering distance learning degrees, where
the student attends school through their internet.
3-High-Fidelity Simulation
• Realistic clinical scenarios help nurses to develop competence,
teamwork, confident and critical thinking with minimal risk of
harm to clients.
• Students Learn how to handle a similar situation in real life.
• Practical laboratories with advanced simulation for
undergraduate and post graduate students for better training
and safety of patients.
Educational Methods:

4- Blended Learning is a combination of offline

(face-to-face, traditional learning) and online
learning.
5- Mind Map

Mind map is a diagram used to visually organize

information. A mind map is hierarchical and
shows relationships among pieces of the whole.
... Mind maps can also be drawn by hand, either
as "rough notes" during a lecture, meeting or
planning session.
Concept Map Mind Map
1- E-portfolio in Educational process
E-portfolio is a learning tool that is
recognized as valuable in enhancement of
the quality of teaching and learning. It is a
simple translation of information from
paper to an electronic form for online use.
E-Portfolio is an organized collection of
professional work to illustrate the
background, skills and experiences of the
individual.

Gaps Facing MSD to Achieve Goals: research

Nursing Research

 The vision for nursing in the 21st century is the

development of scientific knowledge base that enables
nurses to implement on evidence based practice. (High
focus on EBP).
Innovation and its Importance in Medical
Surgical Nursing: clinical practice, research
and education

 Maintenance of quality health services provided to

the patients and their families.
 Meeting the increasing demands of healthcare field
 Apply new advances for prevention and treatment
of common health problems .
 Modifying an existing clinical/ nursing specialties .
 Increasing advances in healthcare filed.
The facilitators of nursing research

 Increased administrative support and encouragement are needed.

 Colleague support and time to review and implement research
findings.
 First and foremost is the creation of an environment in which nurses
are comfortable.
 Questioning and evaluating current practice, seeking out research
based solutions to care problems, and testing them in trials
appropriately.
 Developing nurses‟ research skills through attendance at
conferences, continuing education, and in-service workshops.
 Research utilization is expected and rewarded.
Innovation and its Importance in Medical
Surgical Nursing: clinical practice, research
and education
 Improve quality of teaching and learning process .
 Access to information full time.
 Allows to competition between nursing graduates
 Enhance Medical Surgical Nursing students to
understand and apply research findings from nursing and
other disciplines in their clinical practice.
 Help Medical Surgical Nursing students to understand
and apply the basic elements of evidence-based practice
and work with others to identify potential research
problems
