= [(4/𝛑) [144 (6000/1400)]0.5
= 28 in. diameter

equivalent length of elbow, L = 17 W = 17(14) = 238 in. or 20 ft

From Figure 9-OO at 6000 cfm and 28 in. duct diameter gives, friction loss per 100 ft of duct length of
0.082 in. w.g. (water gage)
30 ft long straight flow loss, H S = (0.082/100) 30’ = 0.0246 in. w.g.

From Table 9-4 at 25.1 in. and depth = 14 in. gives width = 40 in. Hence, duct size is 14 x 40.

14
40
From Figure 9-OO at 4500 cfm and 25 in. diameter gives, friction loss per 100 ft of duct length of
(hS/100) = 0.088 in. w.g. (water gage).

15 ft long straight loss H S = (0.088/100) 15 = 0.0132 in. w.g.

In velocity method, the velocity of air in this Main duct is to be reduced by 3.7 % of the velocity in
MB 15. Hence, air velocity = (1 – 0.037) 1350 fpm = 1300 fpm. This velocity is still within the velocity

The equivalent diameter duct, d = [(4/𝛑) (144 cfm/fpm)]0.5

= [(4/ 𝛑) (144 (2600/1300)]0.5
= 20 in. use 20.6 in. to avoid interpolation
From Table 9-4 at 20.6 in. diameter and depth = 14 in. gives width = 26 in. Hence, duct size is 14 x 26

14

pressure loss in straight flow, H S = (0.1/100) 20 = 0.02 in. w.g.

From Table 9-6 for Flanged entrance loss gives loss coefficient of c = 0.34
13 x 46 13 x 26

contraction loss, H D = c [ VB/4005]2 = 0.34 [1300/4005]2 = 0.0358 in. w.g.

pressure loss in section MC 20 = 0.02 + 0.0358 = 0.0558 in. w.g.
