S.NO EXPERIMENT OBSERVATION INFERENCE

1 Colour of the salt is noted. white Maybe due to the presence of

SALT ANALYSIS II. ammonium, lead, cadmium,
aluminum, zinc,
calcium, barium,
magnesium ions

2 Solubility Salt dissolves in water Presence of water soluble salt

3 Action of heat Evolution of colourless, odourless gas which turns lime May be carbonate ion
water milky

Sublimes on the upper part of the test tube May be ammonium ion

4 To a pinch of salt dil. HCl is added Brisk effervescence of observed Presence of carbonate ion

4.a To a pinch of salt, dil. barium chloride solution is White precipitate which is soluble in dil. HCl is obtained Presence of carbonate ion is confirmed
added and heated

5 To a pinch of salt, dil. H2SO4 is added No Vinegar like smell is observed Absence of acetate ion

6 To a pinch of salt conc. H2SO4 is added and heated No characteristic change is observed. Absence of chloride and nitrate ion.

PREPARATION OF SODIUM CARBONATE EXTRACT:

1 gram of the given salt is mixed with 2 gram of sodium carbonate in a 100ml beaker. 20 ml of distilled water is added to it and the solution is boiled for 10 minutes. The

solution is then filtered and the filtrate is called as sodium carbonate extract.

7 To the small portion of the extract dil. HCl is added till No White precipitate is obtained Absence of sulphate ion
effervescence stops and then barium chloride solution is
added

8 To the small portion of the extract conc. HNO3 is added No Canary yellow precipitate is obtained Absence of phosphate ion
till effervescence stops; ammonium molybdate solution
is then added and the mixture boiled.

The given salt contains the anion : CARBONATE

ANALYSIS OF CATION:

PREPARATION OF Original Solution [OS]: OS is prepared by dissolving the salt in water.

GROUP SEPARATION:

To a few drops of OS, a few drops Nessler’s reagent and excess of NaOH are Brown precipitate is obtained Presence of group 0 cation [ammonium]
added
0 (This is to be written only after negating the presence of group I to VI cations; i.e,
as the last row in this table)

1 To a few drops of OS, dil. HCl is added No White precipitate is obtained Absence of
group I cation

2 To a few drops of OS, dil. HCl and YAS are added No Black precipitate is obtained Absence of
group II cation

3 To a few drops of OS, NH4Cl and NH4OH are added No Gelatinous white Absence of
precipitate is obtained group III cation

4 To a few drop of OS, NH4Cl, NH4OH and YAS are added No characteristic change Absence of group IV cations

5 To a few drop of OS, NH4Cl, NH4OH and (NH4)2CO3 are added No White precipitate is obtained Absence of
group V cations

6 To a few drop of OS, NH4OH and disodium hydrogen phosphate solution are No White precipitate is obtained Absence of
added group VI cation

CONFIRMATORY TEST for Ammonium ion:

GROUP 0

S.No. EXPERIMENT OBSERVATION INFERENCE

1 To a pinch of salt, dil. NaOH solution is Colourless gas is evolved which gives dense white fumes when a glass rod Presence of ammonium ion is
added and heated dipped in dil. HCl is introduced near the mouth of the test tube confirmed
