CHAPTER I

PRELIMINARY

1.1 Background
For learning the English, there are many things what should we know.
There are the meaning, function, and form.
On this session, we will discuss about the Conditional Sentences. Before we
talk about the Formulation and the purpose, we should know what kind of Conditional
Sentences.

4
As we know, Conditional Sentences is the one of Sentence that expresses a co
ndition. A condition is something that can only happen IF something else occurs. A condition
al sentence contains an independent clause and a dependent clause that almost always begins
with “if.” A conditional sentence is only a conditional sentence if it has both of these parts. S
ome conditional clauses might begin with “when.”

For the example if using IF:

 You can have dessert if you finish your homework.
On that phrase, there are 2 meanings:
1. The dependent clause is “if you finish your homework.”
2. The independent clause is “you can have dessert.”

Beside using “IF”, Conditional Sentence can also using “WHEN”

For the example if using WHEN:
 “Hillary, will you call me later?”
 Of course, I’ll call you when I get home

On that phrase there are two clause:

First Clause is I’ll call you
Second Clause is when I get home

According from those phrase, we know the Conditional Sentences is a type of sentence that
states a condition and the outcome of that condition occurring. Conditional sentences are
made up of a dependent clause and an independent clause joined to express said condition.
1.2 Formulation of the problem
Based on the background above, the formulation of the problem from the
Conditional Sentences are:

1. What is a conditional sentence?

2. What are the functions of conditional sentences?

3. What is the types of Conditional Sentences?

5
1.3 Purpose
The purpose of making this paper is to find out about the meaning, function,
and the types of conditional sentences to adding the knowledge about the Conditional
Sentence in a daily life

CHAPTER II

THEORY AND DISCUSSION

2.1 The Definition of Conditional Sentence

Conditional sentence is a complex sentence (compound sentence) which is

formed from subordinate clause that begins with the subordinate conjunction if in the
form of a condition and the main clause in the form of result/consequence (result).

Or also called Conditional sentence is a sentence in English that is used to

express wishes, hopes, suppositions, or plans that may or may cannot materialize. The
general formula for a conditional sentence is:

If + condition, consequence
Or it could also be the reversed formula
Consequence + if + condition

From the formula above, we can see that a conditional sentence has two
clauses, the first is a clause with an if or "if clause" and the second is a core clause or
"main clause". The if clause is used to explain a condition which if it occurs will
cause something or will produce a consequence, while the main clause is used to
explain the consequence itself.
Some textbooks and reference grammars divide conditional sentences into
three structures:
(1.1) Future conditional, The Example: If I have the money, I will pay my
debts.

6
(1.2) Present conditional, The Example: If I had the money, I would pay my
debts.
(1.3) Past conditional, The Example: If I had had the money, I would have
paid my debts.

There are three structures there are as type 1, type 2, and type 3 conditional
sentences respectively.

2.2 The functions of Conditional Sentences

There are three functions of conditional sentences, namely as follows:

1. To presuppose something that will happen in the future.

2. To presuppose something that might not happen now.
3. To presuppose something that has happened in the past.

2.3 The types of Conditional Sentences

There are four types of conditional sentences, namely as follows:
1. Conditional Sentence Type 0
is a structure used for talking about general truths -- things which always happen
under certain conditions (note that most zero conditional sentences will mean the
same thing if "when" is used instead of "if"). The zero conditional is used to talk
about things which are always true -- scientific facts, general truths, and so on.
Formula:

If + simple present, simple present

Simple present + if + simple present

Example of sentences:

“If it rains, the grass gets wet.”

“The grass gets wet if it rains.”

2. Conditional Sentence Type 1

7
is a structure used for talking about possibilities in the present or in the future. The
first conditional is used to talk about things which are possible in the present or the
future -- things which may happen.
Formula:
If + simple present, present future (will)
Present future + if + simple present
Example of sentences:
a. If you tell her the truth, she will forgive you.
b. If I win the lottery, I will take you to Bali

3. Conditional Sentence Type 2

is a structure used for talking about unreal situations in the present or in the future.
The second conditional is used to talk about things which are unreal (not true or not
possible) in the present or the future -- things which don't or won't happen.
Formula:
If + past tense, past future
Past future + if + past tense
Example of sentences:
If i became the President of this country, I would pay more attention to teachers’
prosperity.

4. Conditional Sentence Type 3 is a structure used for talking about unreal situations in
the past. The third conditional is used to talk about things which did not happen in
the past. If your native language does not have a similar construction, you may find
this a little strange, but it can be very useful. It is often used to express criticism or
regret.
Formula:
If + past perfect, future perfect
Future perfect + if + past perfect
Example of sentences:
If i had studied harder, I would have gotten a better job.
