WARNING

Important Safety Precautions

1. Always disconnect electrical supply before placing hands in the machine.

i) To avoid injuries:

Be sure to disconnect the electrical power before disassembling, assembling, or when

making adjustments on the machine.

ii) Protection of machine:

Make sure the power to the machine is turned OFF before plugging or unplugging the
electrical connectors, or when connecting a meter.

iii) Power Settings

Check the rear panel of the SC7500 unit for the correct power setting - 100 V or 230 V.
Set the switch to the correct voltage before connecting to power.

2. Always connect electrical connectors firmly.

i) To avoid electrical failure:

The connectors must be connected firmly together and on to the PCBs. Press on the
ends of the connectors and then in the middle to ensure a firm fit.

ii) Protection of electrical components:

The electrical components may be damaged due to short circuits caused by a loose
connector.

General Precautions

Whenever handling PCBs or any electronic device or circuit, you should take precautions to
avoid static damage. If you do not take precautions, static damage will occur. This may mean
instant failure of components or a reduction in life of components, and future problems.

• Ensure electrostatic charge is safely discharged to ground by touching an

earthed part of the machine or unit.
• Use a grounded wrist strap and earth this correctly.
• Keep components and PCBs in antistatic bags until ready for fitting.
• Do not hold PCBs in contact with ungrounded or non-conductive objects.

Every non-earthed or non-conductive object can carry a static charge, including yourself.
Just walking across a carpet can give you a charge of 15,000 volts or more. Therefore it is
important you observe electrostatic precautions.

E Printer Cable: Parallel Cable (supplied) or Serial Cable (not supplied)

The Parallel cable supplied is a D25 m-m 1:1 IEEE 1284 twisted cable for connection of
the SC7500 to a standard PC printer port. This is an IEEE 1284 compliant cable. Parallel
connection is recommended when using a single PC.

A Serial cable can also be used to print or send instructions to the SC7500. The Serial
cable is not supplied but should have a 9 pin D type socket at the SC7500 end. For more
information on connecting to a PC see the Technical Administration Manual.

Both the Parallel and Serial connection will allow bidirectional communication if supported
by the PC and the operating system.

F SCSI Cable (not supplied)

Necessary for scanning. Transfers scan commands to the SC7500 and scan data and
status to the computer. Connected to the SC7500 via 50 pin high density connector.

F2 Computer SCSI Connection (for scanning)

The SCSI cable from the SC7500 SCSI port should be connected to a SCSI port on the
computer which will be used for scanning.

In the case of Macintosh a SCSI port is supplied with the Macintosh as standard. In the
case of a non Macintosh PC more usually a SCSI card must be installed (not supplied),
along with an ASPI driver (software normally supplied with the card). For more information
on the requirements of the SCSI connection see the Technical Administrators Manual.

G Ethernet Cable (not supplied)

An Ethernet cable is used for connection to a network or to a Macintosh (EtherTalk).

EtherTalk provides bidirectional communication. The connector type at the SC7500 end
should be either RJ45, BNC or AUI. If RJ45 or AUI cabling is used to connect one Macintosh
to the SC7500 without using a network hub then a 'crossover' cable must be used. BNC
cables require special termination.

For more information on connecting to a Macintosh or Network see the Technical

Administrators Manual.

compatible)
G4 Software - RISO Utility software or application software (with
TWAIN for scanning).

Try to make tests which will eliminate areas as possible causes of any fault.

Read Section 7 of the Technical Administrators Manual. The following is a guide to checking
the system by area.

6-2
6.6.TROUBLESHOOTING
TROUBLESHOOTING

a) Area A:
The RISOGRAPH may be tested on its own to determine if the RISOGRAPH is the
cause of any print or scan error.
RISOGRAPH Test Modes

The RISOGRAPH has several test modes for checking the stand-alone function of the
print engine and scanner. Refer to the RISOGRAPH Technical Manual.

If Area A is found to cause the fault carry out normal RISOGRAPH service by referring to
the RISOGRAPH manual.

b) Areas A,B,C,D:
If the "Power of RISOGRAPH" LED is off, or the I/F key can not be selected on the
RISOGRAPH then this indicates a basic connection problem.

SC7500 RISOGRAPH LED

The lower LED of the SC7500 will only light if 5V from the RISOGRAPH is detected by
the OIF PCB via the SCII cable connection. The RISOGRAPH must be switched on and
connected.

Also the communication between the SC7500 and the RISOGRAPH can be tested by
holding the reset key of the SC7500 during switch on to make a test page.

SC7500 Key Test Mode

During switch on of the SC7500, hold the reset key until the data/error LED flashes Red.
Release the key and a test page is printed from the hard disk memory of the SC7500.

Check the connection of the I/F PCB and the SCII cable. Check the OIF PCB of the
SC7500.

c) Area D:

The SC7500 checks itself during switch on.

SC7500 Self Check

During switch on the SC7500 checks the cards internal components. If everything is
okay, the internal speaker will sound within the first few seconds. Then the unit will boot
up through the normal LED sequence. See "Audio Error Signals".

Refer to Page 6-4 for the meaning of audible codes. Check the Technical Administrator
Manual for the meaning of LED modes.

If the SC7500 does not function correctly it may be a hardware, or configuration problem.
Check both. Use this manual to check the hardware. Refer to the Technical Administrator's
Manual to check the configuration.

6-3
6. TROUBLESHOOTING

d) Area D,F,G:

If the SC7500 is switched on without a RISOGRAPH attached or on then the SC7500

will enter non print Test Mode after 2 minutes. (This is signified by the speaker sounding
every 15 seconds). In this state it is possible to use the utility software to read information
from the SC7500 if the print connection is bidirectional.

Bidirectional Utility Software check

If the SC7500 is connected via serial or parallel with Windows 95 or Windows NT, or via
Ether Talk with a Macintosh it is possible to read the configuration and contents of the
hard disk using the RISO Utility Software. (See the Technical Administrator's Manual).

If the SC7500 is restarted with the RISOGRAPH connected and on it should be possible
to print a test page from the SC7500 utility even if the print connection is only unidirectional.

Test Pages from Utility

The utility software can be used to print the following test pages:

Self test page

Settings page
Font list page
Sample page
Postscript font sample page
PCL font sample page (not Macintosh)

Please see the Technical Administrators Manual for details of the test pages.

If a problem occurs during these tests the most likely problem area is G. To check D and
F try different cables or different connection ports. If the SC7500 is connected via a
network try connecting to a local port of one computer. To check Area G refer to the
Technical Administrator's Manual, and refer to the software and hardware vendor or
support personnel of the computer.

If a problem is suspected with the network then it is important to refer the problem to the
network administrator.

e) Area D,E,G:

The SCSI connection can be checked by using the "Status" menu item in the scan utility
software.

With the SCSI cable connected the SCSI connection can be checked using the Status
menu. The status of the hard disk is read back to the computer via the SCSI connection.
(Refer to the Technical Administrator's Manual).

6-4
6. TROUBLESHOOTING

If the scan function cannot be used then the software may not be installed properly. If
using the stand-alone scan utility (DOS or Windows) then refer to the Technical
Administrator's Manual or if using a TWAIN compatible application (Windows or Mac),
check that it is installed and configured correctly (refer to the software vendor).

If the status is accessed but an error message is received when it is used then there is
a connection problem. In this case check the SC7500 SCSI PCB, or the SCSI cable, or
ask the hardware (computer and PC SCSI card) vendor or support person to check the
computer. If an IBM compatible PC is used check that the SCSI card has an ASPI
driver installed - ask the computer support person.

6-5
6. TROUBLESHOOTING

2. Audio Error Signals

The Mother Board generates signals for the speaker to indicate problems, mainly during
boot up.

If all is okay a short tone will be heard and the boot-up sequence will continue. How-
ever if the Mother Board detects an error the speaker will sound with several 'beeps'. In
this case the boot-up will halt.

The problem may be with the Mother Board, the processor, RAM or any device attached
to the board.

Try the following:

a) switching off and re-booting

b) checking the last thing that was changed
c) disconnecting components from the Mother board one by one and re-booting
to identify the problem area.

In addition to the Mother board audio codes the following specific codes are used by the
SC 7500:

a) ••• ••• ••• ••• ••• (for one minute) Output Interface Error (while printing,
additional error message on backchannel)

b) •••••••••••••••••• (for one minute) Serial number mismatch (additional LED

display: red-yellow-green-off . . .)

c) • • • • Test Mode / No RISOGRAPH detected

(15 seconds between each beep)
