Question 1;
In the figure shown, the diameter of the two cylinders are 75 mm and 600 mm, the
face of the piston is 6 m above “W” and the intervening passages are filled with oil
(Sp. Gr =0.80). What force P is required to maintain equilibrium if W = 35 kN?

Figure 1: Created at AutoCAD

Solution:
D1= 75 mm Area= pi (75/2) ^2 =4417.864669 square mm
=0.004417864669 square meters
D2= 600 mm Area= pi (600/2) ^2 =282743.3388 square mm
= 0.2827433388 square meters

S=0.8 specific grav

H= 6 meters
Gravity =9.81 meters per second square

6𝑃 0.8(9.81)(6) 35000
+ =
0.004417864669 1 0.2827433388

P= 0.0565 KN or 56.5 Newtons

Question 2:
A manometer is attached to a tank containing different liquids as shown below.
What will be the difference in elevation of the mercury column in the manometer?

Solution:
(Gravity already taken into account)
Specific Weight of Water per cubic meter =9.81 kin
Specific Weight of Oil per cubic meter = 7.848 kn
Specific Weight of Mercury = 133.416 kn
Air Pressure = 50 kpa

PA=PB
50 + 7.848(3) + 9.81(3)(1.2)
=𝑦
133.416
Y=0.8159441146 meters

Question 3:
A cylinder glass tube is 30 mm inside the diameter, 100cm long has one end closed.
It is immersed vertically with open end down, into a tank containing cleaning
solvent (S=0.65) until only 5cm of its length remain above the liquid surface. If the
barometer pressure is 101.354 kpa, how high will be the liquid rise inside the tube?
Note: Neglect vapor pressure.

Solution:
Picking cm as unit
1 kg/cubic cm
P1 = 101.354 kpa
Find volume
V1= (0,03)2^pi)/4
P2= 101.354 kpa + (9.81)(0.65)(0.95-h)
P2= 107.411675+6.3765h
Volume of air (submerged glass)
V2= (0,03)2^pi)/4 (1-h)
Use ideal gas law, P1V1=P2V2
101.354*(0,03)2^pi)/4 =107.411675+6.3765h*107.411675+6.3765h
6.3765h𝟥+101.035175h-6.05765=0
Using quadratic equation...…
H1= 0.05973m, H2= -15.9
Ans= 0.05973 m or 5.973 cm
