21ST CENTURY CAVITE LITERATURE:

THE GOOD OLD DAYS FROM PROVINCE OF

CAVITE
INTRODUCTION:

Cavite is a province in the Philippines situated in

the CALABARZON region occupying the central section of Luzon. Its

capital is the City of Imus. Cavite, city,

southern Luzon, Philippines. Cavite City is a hook-shaped peninsula

located at the northern tip of Cavite Province, lying 34 kilometers

southwest of Manila and surrounded by three bays, Manila Bay, Bacoor

Bay and Cañacao Bay. It was founded in 1571 by the Legazpi

Expedition and became a Chartered City via a congressional fiat in

1940. It is the site of several important historical events foremost

of which is as the site of the “Grandmother Event of the Philippine

Revolution,” the spark that started it all – the Cavite Mutiny of

1872.

BODY:

The name Cavite evolved from the word “Kawit” or “Cauit,” meaning

hook, referring to the shape of the land along the coast of Bacoor

Bay. Early settlers, who were the Tagalogs, called it “Tangway,”

meaning peninsula.. Chinese traders called it Keit.  When the

Spaniards came, they christened it as Cavite.

Cavite was chartered in 1940 and served for a time as a

capital.Sangley Point Naval Base, at the city’s outer reaches, was

an old Spanish naval base that was captured by Commodore George

Dewey (May 1, 1898). It thereafter functioned because the chief U.S.

naval base and fueling station in Asia until 1941. It continues as a

Philippine naval air facility and shipyard, and transport equipment


is manufactured there and it's also an advert centre and fishing

port.

In Cavite they have six(6) Historical Heritages or Historical

Cites mostly are the tourist spot here in Cavite. The first one is

Battle of Binakayan Monument is the site of a fiercer fighting

between the Spaniards and the Filipino soldiers that happened on

November 9-11, 1896 depicting one of the shining moments of the

Philippine struggle for independence. The second is The Bonifacio

Trial house which is the house where Bonifacio and his brother was

court martialed and were sentenced to die by musketry. The third one

is Gen. Baldomeero Aguinaldo Shrine is the residence of Gen,

Baldomero Aguinaldo, he is the first cousin of Emilio Aguinaldo and

he is also right hand, and he was the president of the Magdalo

Council which established in Imus. The fourth is the Gen, Trias

Municipal Town and Old Church is the one of the uprising in Cavite.

It was in its old church where the senior band members rehearsed the

national anthem, Marcha Filipina before it was played during the

declaration of the Philippine Independence on June 12, 1898 and its

located in General Trias, Cavite. The fifth is the Juan Felipe

Monument this monument is stands proud for the great son of a

Caviteño, the composer of the Philippine National Anthem – Professor

Julian Felipe. At present, the Filipino lyrics of the stirring

composition of Don Julian Felipe was supplied by Jose Palma. January

28, the birth anniversary of Professor Felipe was declared Special

Public Holiday in the City of Cavite by virtue of Republic Act 7805

approved on July 26, 1993. And for the last one Historical Heritages

or Historical Sites here in Cavite is the Tejeros Convention Site

this was the place where the filipino revolutionaries held their
115th convention on March 22, 1987. Let’s know the Native custtoms

here in Cavite, they have three(3)Culture rituals that they need to

celebrate and respect to their belief. The first one is the Live Via

Circus or “Station of the Cross” it is person play done during the

Holy Week. The second one is the Sanghiyang or Sayaw sa Apoy, it is

a pre-colonial ritual celebrated by firewalkers of Indang and

Alfonso. It is a fusion of the elements of folk religion, magic, and

Christian faith. It is done to give thanks to Bathala for the

blessings given to the people. The third one is Mardicas Dance,

During the Mardicas Festival, a procession in honor of the image is

simultaneously held with the war dance of the pirates. The Religion

in Cavite is a Roman Catholicism. The ceremonies that is very

important too them is the Karakol Dance it is a street dancing with

their patron saint being paraded on the streets followed by fluvial

procession, dancing with their saints is very respected to their

place. Karakol is a religious procession-dance performed during

fiestas in Cavite. It is accompanied by folk music played by live

marching band or recorded music. As soon as the image was brought

out of the church, the people started to dance their hearts out in

showing there sincere devotion and love for Nana Pilar.
