Lab Report

I. Design

1. Title: chemical reactions.

2. Purpose: to become familiar with the observable signs of chemical reactions

3. Background information: A chemical reaction is a process that converts one or more

compounds, known as reactants, into one or more distinct substances, known as products.

Substances can be classified as chemical elements or compounds. A chemical reaction

rearranges the component atoms of the reactants to produce various products. Chemical

reactions come in 5 forms:

Synthesis: form, A+B->AB

Decomposition: form, AB->A+B

Single displacement: form, AB+C-> AC+B

Double displacement: form, AB+CD->AC+BD

Combustion: form, Fuel + O2 → CO2 + H2O

4. Hypothesis: Because the pattern for chemical reactions is followed, if the reactants in the

chemical processes are known, the products may be anticipated.

5. Materials:

- dropper

- thermometer

- Chemicals

- Water

- Beakers

- Paper and pen (to note results)

- Test tubes

- Test tube holder

6. Procedure:

a) Experiment 1

Copper sulphate is added with sodium hydroxide which forms a blue precipitate of

copper hydroxide and sodium sulphate.

(CuSO 4 + NaOH -> Cu (OH) 2 + NaSO4)

Type: double displacement

b) Experiment 2

Zinc is added to hydrochloric acid, which leads to formation of bubbles as hydrogen gas

is produced. (the production of a gas indicates that a chemical reaction has occured)

Zn + HCl → ZnCl2 + H2

Type: single displacement

c) Experiment 3

Hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide are mixed which resulted in salt and a release of

heat. The temperature of the reactions changes throughout the expirement going from

22.1 C to 31 C which indicates that it is an exothermic reactions. (release of energy)

HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H2O

type equation Propreties

Experiment 1 Double displacement CuSO 4 + NaOH -> Cu (OH) 2 + NaSO4 Formation of a

precipitate

Experiment 2 Single displacement Zn + HCl → ZnCl2 + H2 Formation of a gas

Experiment 3 Single displacement HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H2O Release of heat

Summary:

Errors:
- Did not use lab coats
- Did not measure amounts of the chemicals
- Did not wait long enough (exp 3)
