TEST CARD 1

PART 1: EXAMINER – STUDENT INTERACTION (1-2 minutes) (3 points)

In this part of the test, the examiner asks questions about YOURSELF

PART 2: INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE: READING THE TEXT ALOUD (2 minutes) (2 points)

In this part of the test, the student picks up one card and read aloud the text printed on the card. The
student has ONE minute to prepare and another minute to read.

Britain isn’t a good place for cyclists. But for pedestrian it is wonderful. When you walk on
a zebra crossing, all the drivers stop. British banks are great, you do everything online, and
you don’t pay when you take money out of an ATM. And if you want to change banks, the
banks do all the work not you.

The British are very polite when they drive. They don’t hoot, and they are patient with other
drivers. They always say thank you when you let them pass. Chemists in the UK are wonderful,
friendly shops and completely different from US pharmacies. Boots sells everything you want,
not just medicine and the assistant give you good advice.

In this part of the test, the student picks up one card and talk about the topic in 2 minutes

Talk about a famous person you know.

Some words are different in American English, for example, they say ZIP code, not
postcode; vacation, not holiday; and cellphone, not mobile phone. Some words have
different meanings, for example, in British English a purse is a thing where women
have their money and credit cards. In American English a purse is a woman’s bag.

The people they live with have a great influence on the way children grow up. Those
who live with their extended family have many advantages. They usually get lots of
love and attention. Grandparents often have more time to read to children and play with
them. As they are often retired, they are not always busy and stressed as many parents
are. They have learnt to be patient and they have already handled most of the problems
children and young people face.

In the UK women have a lot of freedom. In my country, if I want to go to the bank, I


take my brother and he does everything for me. Here I do everything. I like the weather
here. I love days when it rains or it’s cold. It’s so different from the weather in Oman!
The people are also nice and friendly.
My favorite thing about Britain is the Scotch eggs. We don’t have Scotch eggs
where I come from. Everybody says that British food is awful, but I love it. Especially
in pubs.

I get up between 6.00 and 6.30 a.m., I get to work at 7.00, and my meetings usually
start at 7.30. After that, I don’t have a break. I have lunch at my desk. I often do two
operations a day, and I also have lectures and more meetings. At home, I have dinner
with my son. Between 9.30 and 11.30 p.m., I do research and I watch the news on TV.
One or two nights a week I’m on call, so I probably need to do operations during the
night. I often work at weekends, too. But that’s OK – I think I have a fantastic life
because I love my work.
