Variable Bore Ram - Engineering Data

ADVISORY:
Cameron ram assemblies are designed to seal the well bore using pressure pushing upwards
from the bottom of the ram assembly only and are not designed to seal the well bore using
pressure pushing downwards from the top of the ram assembly. An exception to this is the test
ram which is designed to seal wellbore pressure from both directions.

Cameron does not recommend and discourages any attempt to seal the well bore in a manner
that differs from the design of the ram assembly.

The Variable Bore Ram (VBR) enables a standard U, U II, T/TL or EVO BOP to seal on several
different pipe diameters. The rubber in the ram front packers is supported against extrusion by a ring of
steel inserts, which move toward the pipe with the rubber as the rams close. The inserts are similar to
those in the D BOP-packer and they function in the same way.

The mechanism of closure of the VBR packers is similar to that of standard pipe ram packers. The
packers extend forward of the ram body faces. When the rams are closed, the packers contact each
other on the leading surfaces at the sides of the pipe bore. As the rams continue to close, the rubber in
the packers is displaced inward to close the packers around the pipe.

It should be noted that as the VBR packers wear with continued use, a pressure higher than the
recommended nominal closing pressure of 1500 psi may be required to achieve a wellbore seal. It is
recommended that closing pressure be increased using 500 psi increments until a good seal test is
achieved or until maximum operator pressure is reached. Do not apply more than the maximum rated
operator pressure of the Bonnet Assembly.

Several high pressure tests were run in order to estimate the service life of the VBRs (Table 1). In these
tests the rams were closed on a pipe mandrel, test pressure was applied under the rams and held for a
specific length of time, then the pressure was relieved and the rams opened. This was repeated for the
desired number of cycles.

In the event of an emergency, drill pipe may be hung on closed and locked rams. Before hanging the
pipe, the rams should be closed with the maximum available hydraulic pressure, then locked in with the
wedgelocks or locking screws. To determine the pipe supporting capability of the VBRs, we have run
several tests. In these tests the rams were closed on a pipe mandrel with the appropriate tool joint
connection, and the tool joint was pulled down onto the rams.

Table 2 includes the results of these tests along with estimates of hangoff capacity for other sizes and
capacities for the VBR hangoff ram bodies released since 1986. These rams have the upper corner of
the pipe cutout hardened in order to increase their hangoff capacity. They replace the previous bodies,
and the new part numbers are given in Table 3.

NOTE: We do NOT recommend hanging off pipe in the lower end of the range of a VBR.
For example, we do not recommend hanging 3-1/2" pipe on rams whose range is
7-5/8" to 3-1/2".

Table 3 lists the available sizes and the corresponding numbers for the VBRs for the U, U II, T/TL and
EVO BOP.
