Introduction

Windows 10 is simply a PC OS that is developed and launched by Microsoft and it is part
and parcel of Windows NT family OS. After a transitory showpiece at Build 2014,
Windows 10 was officially revealed in September 2014.
Users of Windows 7 and above can freely rove to Windows 10 until July 29, 2016. This
operating system introduces universal apps, which develop on Metro-style apps.
A feature unique to these apps is the fact that they can be operated on numerous Microsoft
products, such as: Windows Holographic, personal computers, Surface Hub, Xbox One
and embedded systems.
Windows 10 has a revised user interface, which handles changeover amid a mouse-based
interface and what is referred to as touchscreen-optimized interface. Unlike other versions
of Windows that have ever been released; Microsoft considers Windows 10 to be a
service.
This means that this service will be receiving constant updates to its functionality and
features.
The operating system has received a great number of constructive reviews since its official
launch in July 2015. According to critics, there is an improvement with this operating
system as far as Windows 10 bundled software is concerned. Critics are also concerned
with user limitation as far as automatic updates are concerned. However, this publication
will help you learn how to choose as well as install updates in your Windows 10.

Chapter 1 – Introducing Windows 10 Editions

Windows 10 was unveiled in a hundred and ninety countries along with a hundred and
eleven languages. According to Microsoft, they developed Windows 10 to provide users
with an exclusive personal computing experience with different devices, including
personal computers, Xbox One, phones and tablets.
Basically, Windows 10 is designed to power the world into a single core, which simply
aims at achieving the Internet of Things. Microsoft development of this new version of
Windows took in to consideration the easiness of using Windows 10 with any supported
device. The various Windows 10 editions are discussed in detail below.

1. Windows 10 Home

This is a desktop edition that is consumer focused. It provides you with familiar as well as
personal experience for 2-in-1s, tablets and personal computers. This edition helps you
achieve great things with Windows 10, due to the new innovations that are incorporated in
the operating system.
The most amazing innovations include fingerprint login, Windows Hello face recognition,
Continuum tablet mode, Microsoft Edge web browser and Cortana. With Windows 10
Home, you can also get Xbox gaming experience.

This edition is particularly useful for mobile devices, such as small tablets and
smartphones. This edition includes new universal Windows apps, which are found in the
Home version, along with newfangled touch-optimized edition of Office.
If you are using your personal mobile devices at work and you are in need of management
capabilities, security and great productivity, then the Mobile edition is what you should

deployment. This edition offers companies the opportunity to establish the speed at which
they espouse newfangled technology, such as the Long Term Servicing Branch and
Windows Update for Business.

Chapter 2 – Windows 10 at a Glance

It Is Familiar
Unlike other versions of Windows where you had to start from scratch to learn the
specifics, Windows 10 is familiar. It is familiar in the sense that you already have in-depth
knowhow of the desktop, Start menu and task bar. Its live tiles ensure that streaming
updates are available for the items that are more important.
This version of Windows is designed to be used with what you already have, including:
peripherals, software and hardware. The always-enabled updates ensure that your
Windows 10 features as well as security components are always up-to-date.

It Is Innovative
Are you a fan of computer games? If you are, then this is the best Windows for you. This
is so because you can now play as well as connect with gamers on Windows 10 devices
and Xbox One. Windows 10 is built for all the games that you love, which includes casual
games and new generation personal computer games. Ensure your desired games and be
the best gamer online with Windows 10.

It Is Productive
You can do what you do best at your best with Windows 10 because it is highly
productive. You can easily and efficiently get things done by putting to use the various
ways of optimizing your screen space and snap apps. This Windows allows you to open
tasks in one view. You can also develop virtual desktops to group items by project or to
gain space.

Windows 10 Interface

Overview
Windows 10 uses tile-based interface, such as the one used in Windows 8. This version of
Windows is designed for touch operation and at the same time it supports mouse and
keyboard.
It constitutes a new form of Start menu and newfangled ways of arranging and managing
Windows. The interface is highly user-friendly and easy to maneuver.
At first glance you will see that it looks quite similar to Windows 8, but with the exception
of the Technical Preview icon along with a few new icons at the task bar. The Start menu
is back, but it appears a little different this time around as expected, but it looks great.
The left side of the Start menu is the same as before and it has a more vibrant, colorful
appearance. You can press All Apps to see all your installed programs just like before. On
the right side of the Start menu you will see some of the Start screens, such as the live
tiles.
Just like the old-type interface, you can move the tiles around, resize them and even
remove them if you do not like them.
You can also resize the entire Start menu vertically and you can just pin now apps to
automatically adjust it horizontally. Start menu also has Search like it always did, but this
time it include web searches along with its results.
If you search for a specific site, it will give you a shortcut to go to the site. Usually, the
system will use the default browser, which is internet explorer; however, you can change
your default browser to Firefox, chrome and the rest.
You will notice minor changes in the manner windows appear in Windows 10; mainly they
do not have borders around the edges. Resizing windows is normal and everything else is
just easy to handle.
You will also notice that the file explorer icon looks a little different and when you press
on it, you will see a few significant changes as well. Mostly the icons for things like
desktop, hard drives and home groups among other things.
If you open up an app formerly known as Metro like the Windows Store, it will start
maximized; though you can resize it like any other window. You can move the window
around and snap it at the edges to create an open space for viewing other windows.
If you click on the task preview button on the taskbar, you get an overview of all the open
windows. You can also add multiple desktops to keep your workspace from getting too
cluttered.
On the left side of the Start menu, you will see Power, Settings, and File Explorer apps. If
you jump into the Settings app, you will see the new personalization area. Under
personalization you will see the new Star area, where you can go to Customize list section.
You can finally customize the list, you can change what shows up, meaning that you can
enable or disable items such as Downloads and Pictures and so on.
How to Customize Windows 10 Start Menu
You can comfortably Add New Items, Delete, Edit or Organize Items to the All Apps
View by getting to the Start Menu folder structure. While you are doing these, you will be
able to find new shortcuts that you make.
Regrettably, the Start Menu folder does not display the Metro apps. Normally, you can
remove a metro app by simply right-clicking on the app in the Start Menu.
As mentioned in the overview above, resizing the Start Menu is easy. You can resize the
Start menu vertically by moving the mouse on the top side and hold and drag. To resize
the Start menu horizontally, you have to pin or unpin tiles.
You need to right-click on a tile to either pin or unpin it and you can rearrange tiles by
dragging them to the desired positions. If a tile is not visible on the Start menu, you can
look for it and either pin or unpin by clicking the All Apps icon to locate the tile.
You can handily pin regular apps to the right side of your PC’s Start menu if you want. In
addition, you can pin items to the taskbar from
All Apps or uninstall items as quickly as possible. While you are pinning an unpinning,
you will observe the Resize section, which has the Small, Medium, Wide and Large
options. You are always advised to select the Medium size to avoid any weirdness with the
sizing.
You can also turn Live Tiles off. All you have to do is right-click on a specific tile from
the Start menu and then select the last option, which reads “Turn live tile off”. You may
not admire a given color that appears on the Start menu; well, you can change that color
by right-clicking on any empty space within the Start menu.
When you right-click on an empty space, you will be presented with two options,
“Personalize and Properties”, choose personalize. You can adjust the color to your
preference from the Color and Appearance dialog.
Chapter 3 – Windows 10 New Features

Windows 10 has a great number of new features. The first one is Cortana, which you must
have knowledge of by now and it is Microsoft personal digital assistant. You can control
Cortana by talking to your computer, you can say “hey Cortana” and it will obey your
command, even if you are across the room.
You can also search information and type in the commands and Cortana will give you the
results just by typing into the search bar in the taskbar interface.
The Action center has notifications area and simple one-click settings to turn items on and
off. One of the confusing parts of Windows 8 was difference between the Settings app and
the Control panel.
Now Microsoft has brought them together in a new familiar settings application that will
replace the Control panel. There is also a new photos app with an entirely different but
familiar interface. It has auto syncing with OneDrive, it has Auto Grouping for duplicate
photos and burst shots and automatic album creation.
There are some great new Xbox integration features and other gaming features in the
system. There is a game DVR mode so you can hump back to your last thirty seconds of
game play and record a clip and share it with people.
You can also stream Xbox games to your PC or tablet. In terms of graphics technology,
Windows 10 features DirectX12, which gives developers the ability to really control how
much hardware power is being used at what time. Therefore, developers have more
flexibility and for you the user.
This means that CPU performance can be 50% faster on average. Power consumption can
be cut in half on average and that is great for laptops and special tablets. Another unique
feature is the new web browser, which features a new rendering engine and a new UI that
fits along with the after design.
There is note taking mode built-in, you can essentially freeze a web page with all the links
still active and you can add comments by typing with the keyboard. There is a new reader
mode built-in, such as what Safari does.
You can take a web page and it will clear the clutter out and format it so that it is more
comfortable to the eyes.
There is also support for PDF files; in most cases websites will remind you that you need
Adobe reader to read a PDF. With the PDF support pre-installed, all you have to do is
click a PDF file and go ahead and read it.
The whole philosophy behind Windows 10 is that it is supposed to be one Windows, one
store with universal apps. Therefore, Windows 10 runs on tablets, PCs, phones and the
Xbox. This may sound confusing at the beginning, but the experience is great.
Windows 10 is a good thing for developers because it is easier to write a single piece of
software and tailor the interfaces for the different devices. It is still technically one
operating system and one name just tweet interfaces.
Continuum is now going to be functioning in newer build of Windows that essentially has
feature that detects whether or not you have keyboards connected to your touch devices.
For instance, on a tablet you have a keyboard and mouse detected and you can run the
system like a normal PC. However, if you detach the keyboard and mouse it will ask if
you want the tablet mode to make it easier for touch.
There is improved multitasking because of the new Multiple Desktop feature. Unlike
before, you can now set up a different virtual desktop to run other programs instead
opening several on top of each other.
You can create a virtual desktop for working, which may be running Internet Explorer,
Excel and Word and another one for Home.
There is a new way of monitoring your running apps on your Windows 10 all you have to
do is click on the Task View icon on the taskbar. You can alternatively pull up one-page
view by swiping in from the left-hand edge of the screen.
Transition across devices has been unified with the introduction of Universal Apps. These
Apps use the same code; however, they adjust their interface to the current device. The
most interesting thing about Universal Apps is the fact that the content for the apps is
stored as well as synced through OneDrive.
This makes it easier for you to pick up from where you left things on your other device.
One good example of such apps is Photos, which will sync your images via OneDrive, and
also pull them across devices. The system can now detect copies and it will only store a
single copy.
There is also the Enhanced Snapping feature that comes with Windows 10. Unlike before,
you can now snap up to 4 apps on a single screen by using a quadrant layout. This version
of Windows will also display others programs and apps that are currently active. In
addition, it will make smart proposals for filling the available space that exists on your
computer’s screen by exhibiting other apps.
Chapter 4 – Upgrading to Windows 10

However, the upgrade varies with respect to device model country, and device
manufacturer among other factors.
Visit your phone manufacturer’s website to check whether or not your phone is supported.
You can as well confirm update availability by getting the Advisor app. Most of the
devices that can support Windows 10 upgrade are those of Lumia, including 635 1GB and
640XL to mention a few
You can successfully upgrade to Windows 10 on your device if your phone is currently
operating on a supported operating system. Unlike anything that you have ever upgraded
via the internet, Windows 10 is substantially large.
Therefore, it requires a Wi-Fi connection or a fast broadband connection of which charges
may apply. The upgrade usually requires adequate space; therefore, you need to ensure
that there is free space on your device.
Important Details about Windows 10 Upgrades
For PC
Feature along with app availability as well as experience may differ with respect to the market and device.
Family Safety child services are not imported after the upgrade; therefore, parents will have to setup safety

Feature Deprecation for PC

Windows Media Center is removed when you upgrade to Windows 10 and you were
initially running Windows 8.1 Pro, Windows 8 Pro, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 7
Professional or Windows 7 Home Premium. Windows 10 installation removes Windows 7
desktop gadgets.
Windows 10 upgrade installation removes Heart Games, Minesweeper and Solitaire,
which are usually pre-installed on Windows 7. You need the latest driver from the
manufacturer’s website or Windows Update if you have a floppy driver. Upgrade to
Windows 10 allow users to select the folder that can be synced from OneDrive settings;
however, the app doesn’t back up placeholder files.
Cortana feature is presently available for the following countries: Spain, Germany, Italy,
France, China, United Kingdom, and the United States. Windows Hello feature needs
specified infrared camera for finger print reader or facial recognition.
You can manually turn on tablet mode to enable continuum on Windows desktop. On the
other hand, continuum is restricted to select premium devices for phones. Music & video
streaming via Movies & TV apps or Groove Music are not available.
Skype is only available in specific regions/ countries; you can find details on Microsoft
Office FAQ page. You need a device with TPM 2.0 and InstantGo for device encryption to
work. Only computers with Connected Standby work with InstantGo.
You need a processor that supports LAHF/SAHF, PrefetchW and CMPXCHG16b in order
to be able to install a 64-bit Windows 10 on a 64-bit computer. To experience optimal
performance when gaming, you will need a graphics card that is well-matched with
DirectX 10.

Feature Deprecation for Mobile
The Mobile edition does not support notifications for emails, messages and missed calls
on contact tiles. This version of Windows does not support Me Card and Me Tile.
Cortana is not able to execute voice commands for opening apps and it does not search for
QR Codes, contact, text messaging, setting and apps. Cortana is also no longer accessible
on some devices after upgrading to Windows 10. You may need to contact Microsoft
because some enterprise features are not available, such as Data Protection under Lock.
Chapter 5 – How to Choose and Install Updates in Your Windows 10

Unlike other versions of Windows where you could easily choose never to check for
updates, Windows 10 automatically checks for updates and installs them. There are only
exceptions for Windows 10 Pro and Windows 10 Enterprise.
The updates are usually scheduled by Microsoft to be installed at a given time, which is of
their choosing. Normally, Windows 10 will first download updates automatically, then set
restart time for your computer and then install updates as scheduled.
Microsoft claims that as they created the latest version of Windows, they ask users to help
them build the best Windows ever. According to Microsoft, Windows 10 design is a
service instead of software; therefore, it needs periodic software updates.
Microsoft assumes that the automatic updates are a great thing and you do not even have
to bother yourself choosing what to update, because that is done automatically by
Windows 10. Most of the updates are aimed at improving security as well as performance.
Microsoft gives you the opportunity to learn what constitutes of Windows by inviting you
to be part of Windows Insider Program. This program is made up of participants who play
a significant role in the step-by-step improvement of Windows.
If you are not an insider, you can become one by following the Get Started link. You will
have to create an account by following the create account blink. You will be presented
with a short questionnaire that needs you to provide the following information: first and
last name; preferred username; password; country/ region; birthdate; gender; country
code; and phone number.

The Kind of Updates You Should Expect
As mentioned earlier, major Windows 10 updates are primarily associated with security
fixes and quality improvement. There are no new OS features introduced. The major
updates that you can expect from Microsoft include but are not limited to:
Fix lock screen problems
Fix problem with USB devices connectivity
Fix problem with reviewed daylight savings time
CSRSS improved security for addressing security bypass
Fix problem with audio playback by using Groove music
Increase printers’ discoverability whenever a computer recommences from sleep
Increase reliability for Windows Explorer, USB, Cortana, and Narrator, video playback, Bluetooth and
network connectivity.

With that said, you cannot actually select specific updates to install when operating
Windows 10. You can only find ways to defer or delay the updates. Microsoft has made it
clear that users who are operating Windows 10 Home have no choice, but to allow
Windows 10 automatic updates to be installed.
If this is to annoying for you, there is a tool that you can use to block given updates to
drivers and Windows. KB3073930 is this unique tool, which was exhumed by ZDNet’s Ed
Bott.
According to Microsoft, KB3073930 is not a tool they envisioned most Windows users
will use to kill Windows updates on Windows 10. To them, this is simply a
troubleshooting tool that was engineered to be used by Windows Insiders on their preview
builds.
As much as it is not certain whether or not the tool will continue doing its thing, it is
surely the best option for Windows 10 Home users. You can download this troubleshooter
package from Microsoft’s support pages.
The tool is simple displayed as a dialog box with the Show or hide updates as the theme.
The trick is unassuming, Windows 10 will not install updates that are hidden and you can
allow updates to be installed by running the package and unchecking the hidden updates.
There are at least three boxes to be checked, each corresponding to a given update. Once
you have checked the updates you want to hide, go ahead and click next.
It is crystal clear that Microsoft’s mandatory Windows updates on Windows 10 are meant
to drag you into the contemporary up-to-the-minute security and performance check.
This is mainly so with the aim of eliminating unpatched systems and popular vectors for
malware. Once again, limited power over updates force you to allow Windows 10 to
install whatever updates it chooses. However, there is a way of turning on system restore,
which will make it easier for you to undo the effects of a specific update every now and
then.
Conclusion

Windows 10 is much more of a service than software. Microsoft has differentiated this
latest version of Windows from the other versions by ensuring that its features are build up
every now and then.
Windows 10 is designed to ensure that you experience the best as far as your day-to-day
computing and gaming activities are concerned. It is up to you (the user) to make the
effort and transform from the old versions of Windows to this new outlook that bring
everyone and everything together in a single operating system.
A feature unique to this version of Windows that is of great concern to so many users is
the mandatory Windows updates. These updates, as discussed earlier, are meant to
improve user security and productivity.
The only challenging part is that you cannot easily turn them off as is the case with the
previous versions of Windows. However, the book has provided you with reliable info on
how to go about the updates.
