MODULE 3: SOLID MENSURATION

Figure 1http://world-placez.blogspot.com/2013/02/Great-Pyramid-Giza-Egypt.html
WHAT IS SOLID MENSURATION?
-It is also known as Solid Geometry. The term
'geometry' was derived from the Greek words
“ge” meaning “earth” and “metria” meaning
measurement.

-Study of three-dimensional shapes.

-Study of the measure of Volume, Area, Height,

Length, and other geometric parts.
Why Study Solid Geometry?

Applications in engineering
-road and bridge constructions

-chemical and physical analyses

-large variety of commercial and engineering

projects
UNIT 1: PLANE FIGURES

Learning Outcome: At the end of the module,

you should be able to solve problems involving
areas of plane figures.
PLANE FIGURES

POLYGON- a closed plane figure with three or more

angles. There are as many sides as angles in a
polygon. The term “polygon” comes from the Greek
words “poly” means many and “gonia” means angle.
Polygons are named according to the number of sides.
3 Triangle 9 Nonagon
4 Quadrilateral or Tetragon 10 Decagon
5 Pentagon 11 Undecagon
6 Hexagon 12 Dodecagon
7 Heptagon 1000 Chilliagon
8 Octagon n n-gon
PLANE FIGURES

Regular polygon-having all sides equal and all

interior angles are equal.

● Convex polygon-having each interior angle less than

180o
● Concave polygon-having one interior angle greater than
180o
Area of Plane Figures
Definition of Terms
● PLANE-infinite two-dimensional figures
● REGION-closed or bounded portion of the
plane
● AREA-when a region is measured, the unit
used to measure area is called SQUARE

Area of Plane Figures

Example 1:Find the area of MNPQ by using

base a) MN and b) PN.
SOLUTION:
a) Using MN as a base, we have
A=MNh1=8⋅5=40
b) Using PN as a base, we get
A= PNh 2=6⋅6 2/3=40
Area of Plane Figures

Example 3: The exterior wall (the gabled end of the house

shown) remain to be painted.
a) What is the area of the outside wall?
b) If each gallon of paint covers approximately 105 ft2, how many
gallons of paint must be purchased?
c) If each gallon of paint is on sale for P500.00,
what is the total cost of the paint?
Area of Plane Figures

Solution:
a)AreaOutside wall= AreaTriangular+ AreaRectangular
A= ½ (24)(5)+(24)(10)=300 sq. ft.
b)Total gallons of paint needed
=300 / 105 = 2.86 gallons
c)Total cost of paint=2.86(500)=Php1430.00
