 Introduction

Thank you for purchasing the Direct Digitizer REGIUS SIGMA (called “this device” hereinafter).
This device reads exposed X-ray image data saved to a plate within a cassette, then outputs it as diagnosis
image data to the connected console.

In order to operate this device, either the medical image processing workstation ImagePilot or the CS-7
(called “Image processing controller” hereinafter), each of which control reception, processing, and output
of the image data of this device, is necessary. Concerning operation of the Image processing controllers,
please refer to the “Operation Manual” of each Image processing controller.
General X-ray images are the intended diagnostic images of this device. Mammographic images are not
included.

This manual covers cautions to be observed during usage, device operation methods, and cassette/plate
handling methods. Make sure to obtain a thorough understanding of the content within this manual, and
the Image processing controller operation manual, before using this device. Even after reading through
this manual, keep it stored near the device for reference to ensure that the device is used at maximum
efficiency.

1) Medical purposes
• Provision of images for diagnosis of disease and injury.
2) Patient groups
• No patients groups that operate or touch the device.
• No identification of patient groups of read X-ray images.
3) Parts of body or organizations to which the device is mounted or that contact with the device.
• No appropriate points.(Device does not come in contact with the patient.)
4) Operating principle
• Insert the REGIUS cassette (hereinafter called the cassette) with a REGIUS plate (hereinafter
called the plate) inside which latent images were formed by X-ray exposure.
• The plate is pulled out from the opened tray, and while conveying the plate, scan the excitation laser
to the plate.
• Photostimulated luminescence emitted from the plate by the excitation laser is focused and detected,
and detected signals are digitized and output as image data.
• By applying erase light to the plate scanned by the excitation laser, remaining latent images will be
erased.
• The plate is reloaded, which had its latent images erased, into the cassette. Take the cassette out
from the insertion slot.

Introduction

Terminology Guide

Terminology used throughout this manual is defined as follows.

Terminology Definition
Registers plate image read condition settings and requests, manages diagnosis images, etc.
Console The console to be used with this device is the Image processing controller, which is sold sepa-
rately.
Application software that manages the network between this device and its console.
JM (Job Manager) It has been preinstalled in the Image processing controller--the console to be used with this
device.
Reader A device for reading exposed X-ray image data written to the plate. (This device)

Plate Its surface is easily-damaged, and accumulated X-ray energy is discharged when exposed to
light, so it is stored within the cassette for handling.
Cassette A case in which the plate is stored for protection and ease of handling.

1.2 Safety Precautions
1.2.1 Overall Cautions
WARNING
• Though this device is classified as Class 1 Laser
Product according to IEC 60825-1:1993+A1:
1997+A2:2001, IEC 60825-1:2007, it includes
a laser unit with a maximum output of 130 mW
(Class 3B).
Under no circumstances should external panels be
removed.
Removal of panels may result in exposure to lasers
or electrocution.

1.2.2 Electromagnetic Wave
Cautions
CAUTION
(1) EMC Statement - The unit has been tested and
found to comply with the limits for medical de-
vices to the IEC 60601-1-2:2007. These limits
are designed to provide reasonable protection
against harmful interference in a typical medical
installation. The unit generates uses and can ra-
diate radio frequency energy and, if not installed
and used in accordance with the instructions,
may cause harmful interference to other devices
in the vicinity. However, there is no guarantee
that interference will not occur in a particular in-
stallation. If the unit does cause harmful interfer-
ence to other devices, which can be determined
by turning the equipment off and on, the user is
encouraged to try to correct the interference by
one or more of the following measures:
-- Reorient or relocate the receiving device.
-- Increase the separation between the equipment.
-- Connect the equipment into an outlet on a
circuit different from that to which the other
device(s) are connected.

tended periods of time, the power plug should be
disconnected from the power outlet.
-- Make sure that the device is not exposed to wa-
ter or other liquids.
-- Never hold the power plug with wet hands.
-- Be careful to ensure that no dirt or dust accumu-
lates on the power plug.

Also, make sure the device is not installed in an
area under one or more of the following conditions.
Doing so may interfere with device functionality or

If any of the actions above are performed, the ma-
chine will stop operating. Also, if performed during
image reading, images may be lost from the plate.

CAUTION
• Make sure the device is not set to a mode in which
image deletion occurs during image reading.
• To prevent image errors during image reading, en-
sure the device is not shaken or moved in any way.
• If an X-ray generating device is positioned near this
device, do not emit X-rays while this device is oper-
ating. Doing so may cause an image error.
• Use of radio communication devices near the de-
vice can cause errors in operation due to electro-
magnetic wave interference: such devices should
be switched off in the vicinity of the device.
Devices which generate electromagnetic waves,
such as microwave therapy equipment, also may
cause errors in operation of the device or in images
the device produces.

blocked or covers in place. Heat may accumulate
inside the device, which could cause damage to the

• If an error occurs for a read image, do not resume
reading with this device or exposure with the image-
reading plate until measures have been taken from
this manual to solve the problem.
• When dealing with a plate jam (when the plate is
stuck inside), follow the process as outlined in this
manual to remove the plate. Ignoring the process
described in this manual and trying to remove the
plate forcefully may damage the plate or guide.
• Do not touch the yellow filter inside of this device.
• This is not an explosion-proof device, so do not use
it near flammable or explosive gases. Doing so may
result in fire.

1.2.6 Cassette/Plate Storage
and Usage Cautions
WARNING
• When the plate is damaged causing the fluorescent
substance to be exposed to the open air, the fol-
lowing cautions should be noted.
-- Immediately stop using the device.
-- If your eyes become contaminated, avoid rub-
bing; quickly rinse your eyes with water, and a
doctor should be consulted.
-- If the fluorescent medium is swallowed, a doctor
should be consulted after carrying out the emer-
gency measures.
-- If the medium comes into contact with the skin,
wash the affected area thoroughly with water.
If the actions above are not taken, bodily damage
may occur.
• A plate with phosphor exposed must be tightly
sealed in a plastic bag for disposal. Also, make
sure to wear rubber gloves when handling the
plate.
• When using the cassette to perform exposure,
contaminants (such as blood, bodily fluid, etc.) or
dust, debris, etc. may have adhered to its surface.
Always clean off the cassette’s surface for each
examination and patient before performing image
reading with the device.
• If a contaminant (such as blood, bodily fluid, etc.)
touches the surface of the cassette, add a small
amount of absolute ethanol or isopropyl alcohol to
a nonwoven cloth, and use it to wipe off the con-
taminant.
• Use only the chemicals listed below for cassette
cleaning:
-- Absolute ethanol
-- Isopropyl alcohol
• When using absolute ethanol or isopropyl alcohol
for cleaning, make sure to follow the instructions
provided by each pharmaceutical company before
use.
CAUTION
• Make sure to hold the cassette firmly while han-
dling so as not to drop it. Dropping the cassette on
the foot may cause injury.
• Make sure not to pinch your fingers while loading
the plate into the cassette.
• Only use the cassette and plate specified by our
company with this device.

ages before performing exposure.
-- A cleaned plate
-- A plate unattended for a long period of time
-- A plate after multiple exposure or high-dose ex-
posure is performed
-- A plate after jam repairs are performed

2.1.1 Functions and Features

This device (a reader) is used for reading X-ray image data taken on an exclusive plate.
The exclusive plate is bent like film, and this device reads images from it as they are fed in. Therefore, this device is
miniaturized so that it can be installed on a table.
Receiving and all setting conditions for read image data is performed by a console called the “Image processing con-
troller,” which is sold separately.

CAUTION
• This device can only use an exclusive cassette and plate combination. The cassette and plate are designed specifically for
use with this device, so they cannot be used with other readers.

2.1.2 System Configuration Examples

System configuration examples using this device are provided below.

• When removing the cassette, the device initial-
ization process will begin, and the Busy Lamp
will be lit.
• Once the initialization process has ended, the
Busy Lamp will turn off, and the Ready Lamp
will be lit.

IMPORTANT
• Do not insert the cassette during the initialization pro-
cess (while the Busy Lamp is lit). Doing so will cause
initialization to end abnormally, and an error will occur.

HINT
When an image remains after erasing once
• When the image erase process was performed once
for an image exposed at high dosage, etc., but was
not completely erased, the second image erase pro-
cess will be performed.
There are two ways to execute the second erase pro-
cess: “Auto Run” and “Display message then se­lect
run”. The setting can be changed by the user tool.
Refer to the Image processing controller Operation
Manual.

When responding to a message to perform the

second erase process
• If you need to perform the second erase process, the
Error Lamp (yellow) will light up, and an image re-
erase request message will be displayed in the Image
processing controller.
• Clicking the [Continue] button at the message will start
the image erase process.
• Clicking the [Eject] button will eject the cassette, and
the second erase process will not be performed. When
doing this, make sure to perform the image erase pro-
cess at a later time.
• Even when selecting the message display option, the
second erase process will be performed automatical­ly
if Image processing controller has not started up or is
not connected to the device.

 3.3 Image Read Operation
The following steps explain how to read exposed plate
images with this device.
CAUTION
• Make sure not to pinch your fingers while inserting the
cassette.
• If an X-ray generating device is positioned near this
device, do not emit X-rays while this device is operat-
ing.
1 Prepare a cassette with an image reading
plate loaded.
If there is a memo between the cassette’s memo
clip, remove it. If there is a sticker etc. attached to
the cassette, remove it.
CAUTION
• Only cassettes specially made for this device can be
used.
• Make sure no dust or debris is on the cassette’s front
surface. If any is found, be sure to clean it off.
If any foreign materials are on this surface,
the plate may not eject properly, and images
may be taken unevenly.
2 Put the Image processing controller in im-
age capture standby mode (click the CR
“Modality” button).

3 Confirm that the device’s Ready Lamp
(green) is the only lamp that is lit.
CAUTION
• Confirm that the Erase Lamp (orange) is not blinking.
If it is blinking, it is in Image Erase Mode. In this case,
press the erase button, or wait up to 5 seconds with-
out inserting the cassette, and the device will return to
image read mode.
4 Insert the cassette in the cassette inser-
tion slot.
CAUTION
• Do not insert anything other than the cassette in the
cassette insertion slot. Doing so may cause a malfunc-
tion.
If a foreign object has fallen inside of the device, con-
tact Konica Minolta technical representatives.
Position the back side of the cassette facing up-
ward, and slowly slide it into place, straight and all

3.3 Image Read Operation
HINT
When an image remains after being erased once
• After reading an image, the image erase process will
be performed. When the image erase process was
performed once for an image exposed at high dosage,
etc., but was not completely erased, the second image
erase process will be performed.
There are two ways to execute the second erase pro-
cess: “Auto Run” and “Display message then se­lect
run”. The setting can be changed by the user tool.

Error Lamp (yellow) will light up, and an image re-

doing this, make sure to perform the image erase pro-
cess at a later time.
When an error occurs for a read image
If an error occurs for a read image, take the following
steps. Do not resume reading with this device or expo-
sure with the image-reading plate until the issue has
been resolved.

Light collection unit might be soiled with dust or debris.

 4.2 Dealing with a Broken Cassette/Plate

CAUTION
• If the plate’s front surface is significantly scratched, or the protective film on its phosphor side has been scratched or bro-
ken, immediately stop using it, and replace it with a new plate.
• If the cassette’s shape is altered due to being dropped etc., this may cause problems to exposed images, so immediately
stop using it and replace it with a new cassette.
• If an image is damaged (flawed), clean the plate and the cassette’s interior.
Make sure there are no scratches, debris, or foreign objects on the plate’s surface, refer to "6.3.1 Plate Cleaning"(p. 69),
and then start cleaning.
Make sure a plate is not loaded in the cassette, then perform the following steps to make sure there is no dust or debris
inside.
-- Open the tray, place the tray’s opening face down, then lightly tap the cassette to remove any dust or debris.
-- Use a vacuum, etc. to suck out any dust or debris that might remain inside the tray’s opening.
Perform a test exposure after cleaning, and if a diagnosis problem occurs, immediately stop using it and replace it with a
new one.
• If scratches, dirt, altered shape, discoloration, reduction in sensitivity, etc. lead to a reduction in diagnosis image quality,
or interfere with device operation, immediately stop using it and replace it with a new one.

If a warning or error occurs for this device, the Error Lamp (yellow) will light up or start blinking. Also, a message will
be displayed on the Image processing controller.
Messages will either be displayed in the center of the screen, or on the task tray.
Check the following for reference, and take appropriate action.

Make sure this device is properly connected to the Image processing controller, then start up the Image processing
controller. Once this device has been connected to the Image processing controller, the Error Lamp will turn off.

When the Error Lamp is blinking

An error has occurred for this device. Take the following action.
1. Refer to “5.2 Dealing with Plate Jams”(p. 54) while performing the image erase or image read process, and remove the
plate and cassette from this device.
2. Turn the device power OFF.
3. Confirm that the Image processing controller and this device are connected, then start up the Image processing con-
