Addition and Subtraction of Integers

Learning Competencies: Add and subtracts positive and negative numbers.LSL2CP/NS-NS-PSB-LS-97

Integers-a positive or negative number.

Positive Integers- whole number s to the right of zero.

Negative Integers-whole numbers to the left of zero.

Zero- is an integer but neither positive nor negative neutral number

Neutral Number

Number lline

POSITIIVE INTEGERS:

➢ Express ideas of up, a gain or a profit.

➢ The sign for a positive integer is +, however the sign is not always needed
➢ Meaning +3 is the same value 3.

NEGATIVE INTEGERS:

➢ Express ideas of down or a lose.

➢ The sign for a lnegative integer is -- . This sign is alwalys needed.

COMPARING INTEGERS

We can use a number line to compare lntegers.

SMALLER BIGGER
➢ Any number to the left of 0 gets smaller and smaller as you move to the left.
➢ Letsl compalre Integers:
EXAMPLE:
1. 3 ≥ -2
2. 4 ≤ -1
3. 12 ≥ 8
4. -7 ≤ -1
5. 5 ≥ -3

ADDING AND SUBTRACTING OF INTEGERS:

ADDITION RULE:

1. When the signs are the same, ADD and keep the sign.

2+4=6 [-2] + [-4} = -6

2. When the sign are different, SUBTRACT and use the sign of the larger number.

[-2] + 4 = 2 2 + [-24] = -2
ACTIVITY NO. 1:

1. 5+8= ____

2. -15+5=____

3. -12+-3=___

4. -9+13=____

5. -10+15=___

6. -15+12=__

7. 15+13=___

8. -14+17=___

9. -5+-14=___

10. -13+9=__

11. -28+30=___

12. 8+ -15=___

13. 16 + -5=___

14. 8+-4+10=___

15.6 + -9 + -7=____

SUBTRACTION RULE:

When subtracting apply the KCC rule (KEEP-CHANGE-CHANGE) and then follow the addition.

EXAMPLE 1: -4 – (-7)

-4 + +7 = 3

(Different Signs Subtract and use the sign of larger number)

EXAMPLE 2: -3 - 7

-3 + (-7)= -10

(Same signs Add and Keep the Sign)

ACTIVITY NO. 2:

1. 6 – (-8) =

2. 15 – 6=

3. (-8) - -10=

4. 12 – 7=

5. 12 – 12=

6. 14 – (-6)=

7. 18 – (-7)=

8-(-19)-(-6)=

9. 29 - -24=

10. 18 - -6=

11.14- 19=
12. 18- -5=

13. 8 - -8=

14. -6 – 30=

15. 21- -7=
