Spelling rules
• We form the past simple of regular verbs by adding -ed:
clean – cleaned protect – protected wait – waited
• If a verb ends in + -e, we just add -d:
die – died produce – produced save – saved
• If the verb ends in a consonant + -y, the ending is -ied:
study – studied try – tried
• If a one-syllable verb ends in consonant + vowel + consonant, we usually double the final
consonant:
chat – chatted plan – planned
• We do the same with two-syllable verbs with the stress on the last syllable:
