Classification Cephalosporin
Indication This drug is indicated in patients with neurologic complications, carditis and arthritis. It is also effective in Gram negative infections; Meningitis, Gonorrhea. It is also for Bone and joint infections, Lower respiratory tract infections, middle ear infection, PID, Septicemia and Urinary Tract infections.
Contraindication y Intravenous ceftriaxone administration is contraindicated in premature neonates up to a corrected age of 41 weeks (week of gestation + weeks of life), and in neonates with jaundice, or who are hypoalbuminaemic or acidotic because these are conditions in which bilirubin binding is likely to be impaired. y Ceftriaxone is contraindicated in neonates (up to 28 days of age) if they require (or are expected to require) IV calcium treatment. o In patients of any age, ceftriaxone must not be mixed or administered simultaneously with any calciumcontaining IV solutions, even via different infusion lines or at different
Side Effects y CNS: fever, dizziness y CV: phlebitis y GI: diarrhea, abdominal cramps, pseudomembra nous colitis, biliary sludge y URO: Genital pruritus; moniliasis y HEM: eosinophilia, thrombocytosis, leukopenia y SKIN: pain, indurations, tenderness, rash y other: hypersensity reactions
Nursing Indication y Inject in large muscles, such as gluteus maximus or lateral aspect of thigh and rotate sites. y Assess for presence of any of the contraindications in the patient, especially hypersensitivity through skin testing y Acquire baseline VS and Monitor VS frequently over the whole therapy y Administer the drug slowly via IVTT y Assess for presence of phlebitis and pain upon administration of drug, as well as other side and adverse effects y Assess for consistency of stools y Raise side rails and encourage to remain on complete bed rest y Give tepid sponge bath if with fever, and
infusion sites. o In patients older than 28 days of age, ceftriaxone and calcium-containing solutions may be administered sequentially, if infusion lines at different sites are used, or if the infusion lines are replaced or thoroughly flushed between infusions with physiological salt-solution to avoid precipitation.

It interferes with the production of proteins that the bacteria need to multiply and divide. This inhibits the ability of the bacteria to grow and therefore stops the spread of the infection.

Tablets should be swallowed whole with plenty of fluid while sitting or standing to avoid ulceration. Consult your doctor if you get a severe persistent headache, or double or blurred vision while taking this medicine. Consult your doctor if you experience bruising, sore throat, fever or infections while taking this medicine.

patient to swallow capsules wholenot to open, chew, or crush them. If using oral suspension, empty packet into a small cup containing 2 tbsp of water. Stir and have patient drink immediately; fill cup with water and have patient drink this water. Do not use any other diluent. Take the drug before meals. Have regular medical follow-up visits. You may experience these side effects: Dizziness (avoid driving or performing hazardous tasks); headache (request medications); nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (maintain proper nutrition); symptoms of URI, cough (do not selfmedicate; consult with your health care provider if uncomfortable). Report severe headache, worsening of symptoms, fever, chills.
