THE HISTORY OF

BASKETBALL
INVENTOR

Basketball began with its invention in 1891

in Springfield, Massachusetts , by
Canadian physical education
instructor James Naismith as a less injury-
prone sport than football.
FIRST BASKETBALL GAME

On December 21, 1891, Naismith published the

rules of basketball, a new game using five basic
ideas and thirteen rules and that very same day
he asked his class to play a match in the Armory
Street court, a 9 vs 9 using a soccer ball and 2
peach baskets.
HOW IT GOT POPULAR

The YMCA (also known as Young

Men’a Christian Association) played a
major role in spreading this throughout
the United States, Canada, and the
world. In 1893, they arranged the first
European match in Paris. At the same
time, they went to China, India, Japan
and Persia.
FUN FACT

• When the first match of basketball was about

to start, a student of Naismith proposed to call
the game “Naismith game” but another person
suggested to call it basketball since there was a
ball and a basket.
