TYPE ASSIGNMENT: Group Role-Play with groups of 5* students (please tell me in advance if your
group has more/less than 5).

TOPIC: Discussing an assigned topic.

TIME: 10 to 12 minutes of speaking time (playing music, dancing, “playacting” without speaking (like
acting like driving/riding something), or playing videos unless they are a background and you are talking
about them, DOES NOT COUNT as “speaking time”).

good scaffolds to help you decide what to include in, and how to organize, your role-play.

REQUIRED CONTENT:
• Students should include at least 1 “mistake” that they correct using the guidelines in the text book
(Unit 5).

• Students should present an argument for their topic / point of view based on the “strong argument”

any possible bias related to them (their own or from others).

SCORING: Your scores will be based on the following:

Students will prepare a presentation that they will make a video of and submit the video for grading to my
school email: sean.b@ubu.ac.th. PLEASE make sure I can access the video. Please use a standard
format like MP4, or if you post a link to your Google drive, be sure to grant me permission to view
the files. YOUR FILE NAME should be your group name and “Role-play”, for example: “Group A
Role-play”. Be sure to introduce yourselves and give your Student ID number at the beginning to
make it easy for me to know who to give which marks.

A couple of friends are thinking of opening a business, or alternatively have a small business that
is not doing well / good business. The others in the group already have a business that is doing
well.
The friends get together. Talk turns to their businesses and the group who is having some
problems asks their friends for some advice. They discuss things that they should and should not
do and what they all could do better and what are the best things to do to have a successful
business (like advertising, online presence /sales, etc.). They also talk about the changing
economy and make predictions about what will or might happen in the future.

A group of friends are discussing the advantages and disadvantages of (good and bad things
about) several “green technologies” compared to older, traditional technologies (for example
electric vehicles (EVs) or hydrogen cell powered vehicles compared to traditional internal
combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, or methods of generating electricity, etc.) and giving their
opinions. They also discuss their predictions /opinions about what will or might happen in the
future regarding things such as cars, trucks, electricity production (oil, gas, solar, wind, nuclear,
hydro-electric, etc. powered generation plants), use of fossil fuels, plastics, etc. and offer advice
on what they think is best, or that can be done better regarding these things and the environment.

A group of friends are chatting about sports and they start discussing whether modern
professional and amateur sports have become “more of a business than a sport”. They talk about
things like how much professional athletes get paid, whether amateur athletes should get paid,
whether advertising during sporting events should be limited, whether professional athletes or
amateur athletes that get paid personally to compete and or promote a company (this is different
from being provided support for training provided to all athletes on a team, like the Thai or US
Olympic team), like in the past, or should they be banned from participating in “amateur events”
and events like the Olympics, World Games, the SEA Games, the Asian Games, or the Pan-
American Games, etc.
They offer their opinions, what they think would be better (or worse), or event the best (or worst)
to do for the athletes and the sports, as well as their opinions / predictions about what will / might
happen in the future.

A group of friends are talking about sports that they like to watch and/or play/do and ask for /
give advice on playing/doing them well. They also start talking about strange, weirs, or odd
sports they have heard about or seen and they describe them and give their opinions about them
and if they would like to try them (and why they would or would not try them). They also discuss
their opinions / predictions about hos sports may change in the future and what sports may
become popular or “accepted” (like having “E-gaming” included in the SEA games, or Sepak
Tekraw added to the Olympics, etc.).

A group of students who plan on having business careers are discussing why they are interested
in becoming a businessperson. Whether they want to work in Thailand or move overseas, and the
advantages / disadvantages (good and bad things) about working for / having a domestic (in
Thailand) or international business / company. They may also chat about the difference in the
private sector (domestic and international) and the government sector relate to business careers.
They describe and give their opinions about what their, or a, “dream job” in the business sector
would be. They also ask for, and give, each other advice about how to get a “dream job”. They
also share their opinions / predictions about the future of the domestic and/or international
business and/or their future careers.
