PROCEDURE RATE
1. Ensure implementation of Universal Precautions and COVID-19 protocols.
2. Verify the doctor’s order.
3. Verify the patient’s identity, using two identifiers.
4. Explain the procedure to the patient.
5. Wash hands and wear gloves.
6. Gather equipment and supplies; place them on a clean work surface.
7. Wear clean snug fit gloves.
8. Open your macro or micro-set.
9. Place the patient in a comfortable position. Apply a tourniquet and assess
potential insertion sites for the best veins.
10. Apply the tourniquet above the intended venipuncture site.
11. Clean the intended site with an antimicrobial solution. Allow drying.
12. Prepare catheter per manufacturer’s guidelines.
13. Stabilize the vein and apply the traction on the skin, above the intended site with
a non-dominant hand.
14. Insert catheter bevel up at a 5-15 degrees angle. Observe for blood return within
the flashback chamber.
15. Holding the stylet steady, push the catheter off the stylet and into the vein until
the catheter hub is situated against the skin.
16. Release tourniquet. Apply pressure on the insertion site.
17. Hold the luer connector or the end of the macro-set.
18. Remove the stylet and connect the luer connector to the cannula.
19. Secure to skin with tape.
20. Label the IV site with the date, initials, gauge, and length of the catheter.
21. Open the V-Track controller of the macro-set and observe for backflow.
