The article spoke on the topic of genetic modification in
film and how it can cause the characters to struggle to
find their identities. Coming of age film revolves around
the idea of discovering yourself. The article spoke on how
if you are created in a certain way there is nothing to
discover or unique personality as it was all premade and
chosen. It offered the question of how these genetically
modified people come to terms with their premade
selves?
The teen film industry has gone through many different
phases and keeps changing. The 1950s to early 2000s
saw many teen movies about teens in everyday
situations, something a teenage could relate to. The
movies made for teenagers then shifted toward more
fantasy movies, having a hero for the teen audience. A
large amount of teen movies at this time were also based
off of books with an already large teen audience, these
gave the movies a guaranteed amount of success. All
teen movies have an arc of coming of age but they way
coming of age is portrayed has many different variations.
Making a coming of age film is more than the plot, the
technical work plays as much of a role as anything else.
Heightening emotions in the film by creating certain
moods in lighting and the closeness of the shots to the

important to bring the audience into the characters
thoughts as it is a showcase of their entrance into
maturity.
The coming of age genre typically revolves around the
ideas of relations a teen would have and their own
personal journey. The teens that are usually shown in
coming of age films are from the middle class and that
can relate to the most teens. These films are mainly
melodramas of a somewhat normal teenage life, with
expectations for supernatural or horror subgenres in
coming of age.
Making a memorable film that attracts audiences needs
to be visually appealing for the audiences. A film could
have great story but may lack the visual appeal of it all
making it less interesting to watch. With a melodrama
genre of coming of age making the film visually appealing
is major part in getting the story to remain relevant.
Film made for youth can be represented in nearly every
type of genre from horror to romance. The main idea of
all films that are targeted toward youths is to represent
common situations with their own unique qualities that
the youth may experience or fantasize about. Coming of
age film deal with teenage issues and wants which
attracts teens to the theaters to watch something where
they can see themselves.
