An aging population has several drawbacks for society. It increases pressure on governments who must spend more on social welfare programs for older retirees. A higher proportion of older people also creates a shortage of labor as young people are better suited for certain jobs in industries like construction and manufacturing. While older people contribute much, too high a percentage of them can negatively impact labor markets and economic development.

Nowadays, the aging population in the society becomes
an obvious phenomenon in many countries. However, I
think it has many drawbacks to the society.
A higher population of older people will increase the
pressure of government. By definition, a higher
percentage of old people means, the population of old
people are much higher than younger people. And most
old people have already retired. Old people have their own
rights to get the social welfare, but the increase in the
population of old people in a society group means that
government has to spend more money to guarantee the
social welfare of old people. Although a suitable population
structure will make this budget reasonable,
an unsuitable population structure will make government
have to take other measures such as the increasing
of taxes and have more pressure.
A higher proportion of older persons will create a
shortage of labor force in a society. By definition, a shortage of labor force refers that the number of people in some sectors of a society such as the construction industry and the manufacturing industry is less than the number of needs. These industries have age related thresholds, and the young people can easily to achieve those requirements. Although old people can also do those jobs, they are less suitable than young people. In conclusion, although old people have a lot of benefits, a higher proportion of older people is bad for the labor marketing and the development. And I think that the government should take some measures to solve this problem.
