Course Overview for Learners: ENGLISH 102

1) What is this course about?

English 102 is a natural progression from English 101, building on skills (prewriting, revision, editing,
paragraph composition) learned in English 101. Students are expected to continue the writing process
with research and critical analysis of multimodal texts.

2) What is of particular interest about this course?

The instructor guides students through a process of critical examination and analysis of multimodal
texts. The instructor acts as a facilitator, giving more choices to students for written, critical responses.
For example, from the beginning in Unit 1, students’ choose between six different speeches that interest
them for critical analysis. In Unit 5, students are introduced to poetry from various cultures such as
African-American, Native American, and Middle Eastern, among others. Cultural diversity is promoted in
every unit of the course, instead of the basic British Model of text.

3) How will you get the most out of this course?

As students’ learned in English 101, writing is a journey and takes practice as does developing critical
writing and thinking skills. The class uses tools such as Graphic Organizers and open-ended discussion
questions that aid students in critical thinking skills. Critical analysis is also developed through peer
review, student choice of text, cultural diversity texts, and journal responses.

Instructor feedback implemented in writing revisions is essential for success in any course, but
specifically for writing. Pay close attention to instructor feedback for all assignments.

Next, be sure to pay close attention to individual assignments and the instructions, along with due dates.
Time management is essential in this course.

Prior to starting your assignments and discussions, review rubrics, so you are aware of the criteria for
each activity, prior to putting forth the time and effort to complete.

Engage and collaborate with your peers, as well as your instructor. Deets library has so many tools for
you to use. Be sure to start your research in Deets library, as opposed to Google or other online
resources.

Ask your instructor for assistance and clarification, if you need it. He or she is there for you.

Finally, do take advantage of the Online Tutoring Center (OTC) while in the class. The OTC is an excellent
free resource to all students that can help you achieve success in any class.

4) What is your path for success in this course?

To be successful, devote several hours a week to complete your coursework. Record your feedback
from instructors and consider various approaches to the situations you will be confronted with. If you
are unsure or confused about any assignment, discuss it with your instructor and peers. The more that
you put into the coursework, the greater your personal and professional development will be.

Retain copies of your assignments and self-assessments, as they can be useful in your endeavor of
finding your desired career path.
