Compare the PhilPSP Competency Standards for Practice Area No.4 with that of the ASHP
Guidelines: Minimum Standard for Pharmacies in Hospitals by answering the following
questions:
1. Classify the PhilPSP Competency Standards according to the ASHP Standards. Explain
briefly as to why they fall under standard.
Competency Standard No.1: Provides quality medicine and offer health products
appropriate to the needs of the client/patients.
- to maximize the patient's quality of life in relation to their health and to produce
successful therapeutic outcomes while keeping costs reasonable.
Competency Standard No.2: Compounds products in a manner that ensures product
quality, safety and efficacy.
- Compounding practices refer to the minimal requirements for the procedures,
facilities, and controls needed to compound a medicine to ensure that it has the
identity, strength, and satisfies the quality and purity requirements it is claimed to
have.
Comptency Standard No.3: Counsels client/patient on the safe and judicious use of
medicine and other health products.
- Pharmacists can promote conversation by posing queries. They should evaluate the
patient's prior knowledge of the recommended therapy. This is done in order to
customize the counseling to their needs.
2. Are there any ASHP Standard not included in the PhilPSP Competency Standards? If yes,
enumerate them.
- PERFORMANCE CRITERIA – Evaluative elements that specify the activities
and/or tasks needed to be accomplished in order to carry out a specific.
- EVIDENCES – Outputs, outcomes, and/or examples relevant in achieving the
competency.
- ELEMENTS – Actions and processes that are expected to be performed in
demonstrating a specific competency.
3. Given the PhilPSP and ASHP standards, how do you think can the practice of hospital
pharmacy in the Philippines be further improved in the actual setting?
- At every stage of the dispensing procedure, printed prescriptions should be compared,
and drugs should be confirmed several times. Another person's verification can help
to further lessen the errors brought on by confirmation bias. When third-party
verification is not possible, delaying self-checking rather than doing numerous
confirmations quickly can be an useful strategy. The most efficient strategy to
increase dispensing accuracy is probably to offer complete and comprehensive patient
counseling services each time a prescription is filled. The patient counseling
procedure gives pharmacy staff members an additional chance to spot oversights and
errors that would have gone unnoticed in addition to ensuring that all patients receive
the information and education they require. The frequency of avoidable medication
errors may increase if counseling services are not offered for any reason.
