CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

The outbreak and the rapid spread and transmission of the

coronavirus disease throughout the world truly and undeniably affected

everyone. This situation leads and produces a notable emotional impact

on the general population as well as on the medical workers. According to

Brown et al., (2021), the most common changes that the students have

felt during the pandemic were an increase in lack of motivation, stress,

anxiety, and isolation. Continual educational stress has been shown to

have a detrimental influence on students' learning ability and

performance, as well as their physical and psychological well-being.

(Susan et al., 2021).

Psychological stressors are physical and social environmental

circumstances that affect a person's adaptive resources and capabilities

(Monroe and Slavich, 2016). As explained in the study by Dhahri et al.,

2020, the well-being of the students is defined as a positive attitude,

mood, behavior, experiences, and relationship at school, which justifies

that it affects the students' capability to function. Moreover, according to

the study by Lee (2020), going to school is a way for students with

mental health concerns to cope. Being lonely for a long time has shown a

negative impact on the students' mental and physical health, leading to

depression, musculoskeletal issues, and even chronic illness (Gaffney,

2020).

Theoretical Framework

This study will improve the knowledge of the students on how they

will handle the effects of the pandemic on their mental health

When locked down happened due to COVID-19 people were forced

to stay inside their houses for a long time, schools closed physically, and

switch to online classes. Some of the students have healthy mental health

before the pandemic but most of them developed anxiety, stress, and

depression when switched to online classes. Students often have anxiety

attacks during the lockdown resulting for them to have poor performance

as well as not being about to socialize with others.

The main problem that the researchers want to solve is knowing

what are the effects of the pandemic on students' mental health.
