1 General – Introduction

1.1 This document defines the minimum installation requirements and guidelines
for Smart’s 2G/3G/4G Radio Access Network (RAN) based on current
telecommunication industry practices.

1.2 This document is meant for the Vendor or its qualified contractors who are
responsible for the telecom implementation of Smart’s network.

1.3 Where the word “shall” is use means that the practice or guideline is
mandatory whereas, the word “preferred” is use to mean that Smart would like
to do it this way. The vendor is alternatively obliged to propose guidelines and
best practices that are based on its years of experience conducting telecom
implementations according to telecom industry standards.

1.4 Any deviations or changes in these documents shall only be made known and
approved by Smart.

1.5 The Vendor is responsible to instruct its’ employees or contractors in the


appropriate safety procedures and practices and ensure adherence to these
procedures and practices while on the site premises.

1.6 The installation guidelines contained herein shall be adopted in their present
form, but may need to be modified (delete/add/change) for specific Smart
requirements, technological changes, or improvements to existing methods.
Smart reserves the right to make such changes to the guidelines and
requirements specified herein. In any case, if any change(s) should prove
necessary, the Vendor shall be given written notice of such change(s). Upon
receipt of such change(s), the Vendor shall initiate the necessary actions to
conform to these guidelines.

2 PURPOSE
The purpose of this document is to define the guidelines for Radio Access Network
(RAN) installation for Smart’s new site, swap and expansion deployment.

3 SCOPE
This document shall cover the requirements for indoor and outdoor installation
including earthing, power supply and ancillaries of Radio Access Network (RAN)
Equipment and shall be used as a reference for installation works, quality audit and
acceptance by the Equipment Vendor and the Network Roll out Team.

5 SCOPE OF WORKS, COMPONENTS and MATERIALS


RAN installation shall be carried out with the following:

5.1 INDOOR INSTALLATION

BTS Cabinet/ Rack

BTS cabinet/ rack shall either be deployed for indoor or outdoor application. Installation
shall comply the following:

➢ Proper handling of Cabinet/ Rack, shall be free from scratches, dent, misalignment,
etc.
➢ Install BTS Cabinet/ Rack as specified on approved floor plan or TSSR.
➢ Base shall be floor mounted and torqued to specs.
➢ Cabinet shall be mounted to base and torqued to specs.
➢ Cabinet/ Rack shall be properly aligned and leveled.
➢ Blank panels shall be installed, where applicable.
➢ Cabinet door is properly fitted with ground wire connected.
➢ Cabinet support/ bracing shall be installed if required.
➢ Unused cable entry access holes shall be properly covered.
➢ Cabinet/ Rack grounding shall be properly connected to indoor earth bar/ busbar.
➢ Cabinet/ Rack shall be properly labeled.

Baseband Unit (BBU)

Similarly called as system module and usually installed on BTS Cabinet/ Rack along
with DCDU/ DCPDB as part of its ancillary. Installation shall adhere the following:

➢ Proper handling of BBU and its sub-modules or PIUs prior and during installation.
➢ Each sub-module or PIUs shall be properly inserted and tightened in their
respective positions.
➢ Vendor supplied proprietary DC cable and connector shall be used from DCDU/
PDU to BBU with label on both ends.
➢ BBU grounding shall be properly connected to indoor earth bar/ busbar.
➢ BBU module shall be properly labeled.
➢ Unused sub-modules or PIU slots shall be covered with dummy plates/ panels.
➢ DCDU/ PDU shall be installed on cabinet/ racks only (no wall mounting).

DC Distribution Unit/ DC Power Distribution Board (DCPDB)

➢ DCDU/ DCPDB shall be installed in 19” Rack as specified on approved bay face
plan or TSSR.
➢ DCDU/ DCPDB shall be leveled and properly mounted using screws included in
the installation kit.
➢ DCDU/ DCPDB grounding shall be properly connected to indoor earth bar/ busbar.
➢ DCDU/ DCPDB shall be properly labeled.

5.2 OUTDOOR INSTALLATION

Mounting Brackets/ Frames

Smart’s outdoor deployment requires mounting brackets/ frames (i.e H-Frame, Circular
Gantry, RF Antenna Mounting Bracket, etc.) to be installed depending on the following
Antenna Support Structure/ Tower types:

➢ Self-Support Tower (3 or 4-legged, circular or angular)


➢ Monopole (tapered hexagonal)
➢ Guy Tower (triangular with guy support)
➢ Bi-pod Tower (circular)

➢ Rooftop Mini Tower (3 or 4 Legged, angular, with structural I-beam if necessary)


➢ Rooftop Poles (wall mount, floor mount, bi-pod or tri-pod poles fixed to the rooftop
structure)

The antenna mounting brackets shall be:

➢ Accurate to determine the required bracket for each antenna/ sector.


➢ Free from rust and corrosions (preferably hot-deep galvanized).
➢ Mounted on H-Frame, Circular Gantry, Tower Leg (pipe, tubular, angular sections).
➢ Installed and assigned for every sector azimuth.
➢ On a height and direction as specified on the approved TSSR.
➢ Free from obstruction.
➢ Adhere to vendor equipment specifications.

Remote Radio Unit (RRU)


Depending on site configuration and RRU specifications, it is expected that G900,
G1800, U900, U2100, L700, L850, L1800, L2100 and L2300 will require 1 RRU per
sector. RRUs shall be installed in various scenarios:

➢ At the back of antennas when using Self-Support Tower (Figure 1).


➢ At the bottom of tower leg/ outdoor cable ladder support when using Guyed/ Bi-pod
Tower (Figure 2a and 2b).
➢ Inside BTS cabinet when utilizing existing RRUs (Figure 3).

And ensure the following installation shall be observed:

➢ Properly mounted on the pole or frame, correct type of fixation, mounts and brackets
are tight.
➢ Mounting gaps between RRUs shall not compromise heat dissipation. At least 40mm
spacing between RRU’s.
➢ Covers are properly mounted and secured.
➢ Are grounded with correct cable type, lugs and are properly crimped and connected
to the nearest outdoor earth bar/ busbar.
➢ All cables are connected properly, no crossed cables.
➢ RRUs shall be properly labeled.
➢ Unused ports shall be covered with caps.

Band Pass Filter and Dual Band Combiner

Installation of Band Pass Filter and Dual Band Combiner shall comply the following:

➢ Shall be mounted on pole/ frame between antenna and RRU with correct type of
fixation and brackets.
➢ Shall be grounded to the nearest outdoor earth bar/ busbar.
➢ Shall be properly labeled according to bands and sectors.
➢ All connectors termination shall be properly weatherproofed.

Band Pass Filters Dual Band Combiners

RF Panel Antenna
Antennas shall be installed and comply with the following:

➢ According to the design that has been approved by the responsible RF Engineer or
approved TSSR. The design shall include:

• The correct type of antenna.


• Location, tower leg assignment.
• Height of antenna.
• Correct alignment, regarding mechanical tilt and azimuth.

➢ Correct type of fixation used, mounts and brackets are tight.


➢ Antenna RET device and cable shall be properly connected and weatherproofed.

5.3 CABLINGS

All cables and their related equipment shall be installed according to Smart’s approved
design, guidelines and vendor specifications.

During delivery, storage and manipulation of all cables and feeders shall be kept clean
and free from dirt, mud and waters. Cables shall be protected from rain by temporary
roof, shed or a protective cover; they shall be raised from the ground by wooden or
plastic strip spacers. Under no circumstances, cables shall not be allowed to rest on wet
soil or decaying vegetation.

Care shall be taken that cables are not damaged during transport and handling.

Cables shall only be cut in weatherproof locations, using tools and methods that are
recommended by the manufacturer, ideally tools that are supplied by the manufacturer
of the cables.

Cables shall not be exposed to standing water, water traps in cable runs and ducts shall
be avoided. Continuous submersion is strictly prohibited. Cable runs shall be designed
and executed in a way that does not allow water to advance to vulnerable components
(weatherproofing, glands, etc.) along the cable.

It is not allowed to join two or more short cables to achieve the total length of a cable
run.

As with any cable, bending radius shall follow the recommendations of the manufacturer.
Routing shall be done properly by avoiding tension and sharp turns.

CPRI Cables

CPRI cables allows the baseband signal to pass between the Remote Radio Unit (RRU)
and Baseband Unit (BBU). Pair of CPRI cable shall be used for each sector for each
band. Routing and lacing shall be done as follows:

➢ CPRI cables from the same sector shall be bunched together as they enter the
porthole (Figure 4).
➢ CPRI cables shall be routed along indoor cable ladder upon entering the equipment
room using cable clamps. Arrangement shall be per sector and whenever possible,
clamps shall be mounted on the edge rail. The CPRI cables shall be laced together
using cable ties as routed downwards from indoor cable ladder to BTS cabinet
(Figure 5a and 5b).
➢ CPRI cables from RRUs shall be fastened along tower outdoor cable ladder support
using CPRI clamps in a way that minimizes excessive movement due to windy
conditions, to protect cables and connectors from damages. Clamps spacing shall
vary between 1m to 1.2m. CPRI cables shall be clamped or arranged as sector 1 in
the innermost followed by sector 2 and sector 3 and shall be laced with cable ties
along bending (Figure 6a and 6b).
➢ CPRI cables shall be properly connected to RRU and BBU (Figure 7a and 7b).
➢ CPRI cables run from RRU and BBU shall be routed properly, of correct length as
per design and labeled from both ends (technology/ bands and sector no.). CPRI
shall be looped per technology/ band and sector according to the following
scenarios:

• [Scenario 1] For all tower types, recommended location of CPRI loop is


below outdoor horizontal cable ladder near the porthole. Loop diameter is
equal to the width of horizontal cable ladder (Figure 8).
• [Scenario 2] For self-support tower with landing pad but no corner mesh
flooring, recommended location is below outdoor horizontal cable ladder
installed in the landing pad of the tower (Figure 9).
• [Scenario 3] For lacking space below outdoor horizontal cable ladder, install
the loop inside the equipment room below cable ladder/ tray (if still no
space available, vendor shall provide a separate rack for CPRI loop
management) (Figure 10).

External Alarm Cables


Equipment external alarms shall be terminated between BBU and Rectifier. Installation
shall adhere the following:

➢ Use Cat5 cable or vendor supplied external alarm cable with appropriate length.
➢ Cable shall be harnessed on rectifier cable management.
➢ Cable shall be stripped in one end, between cable sleeve and multi-pair wires shall
be covered with shrinkable tube.
➢ Each pair of cable wires shall be properly terminated on rectifier external alarm
terminal block with other end terminated on BBU using RJ45 connector.

DC Cables

Installation of DC cables for the Remote Radio Unit (RRU) shall be done with proper
routing. Prerequisite is to extend the DC supply from Rectifier to DC Distribution Unit
(DCDU)/ DC Panel Distribution Board (DCPDB). Distribution Circuit Breaker (CB)/ DC
Load slots shall be used to provide DC supply for each RRU. Cables shall neatly routed,
cable strands shall not expose, free from tensions- slacks and bending shall take into
consideration prior to termination.

➢ DC cables shall be properly connected to DCDU/ DCPDB and RRU (Figure 11a and
11b).
➢ DC cables run from DCDU/ DCPDB to RRU are properly routed, of correct length
and labeled from both ends (technology/ bands and sector no.).
➢ The fixations of DC and CPRI cables are of correct type and intervals using vendor/
manufacturer cable clamps when run in an indoor cable ladder and outdoor cable

ladder/ extension support. When cable ladder is fully utilized, a cable tie shall be
used.
➢ Vendor supplied DC cables shall be used from DCDU/ DCPDB to Rectifier DCPDB
and shall be labeled on both ends (on Rectifier side- DCDU/ DCPDB no.; on
DCDU/ DCPDB side- Rectifier no. and Circuit Breaker no.) (Figure 12a and 12b).
➢ DC cables terminated between DCDU/ DCPDB and Rectifier DCPDB shall be color
coded as Blue (-) and Black (+).
➢ DC cables terminated between DCDU/ DCPDB and Rectifier DCPDB shall be used
with proper lugs and sleeve shall be covered with shrinkable tube.

Jumper Cables

Jumper cables are used to connect the Remote Radio Unit (RRU) RF ports to the
antennas either directly or indirectly (using feeder cables and passive devices). Cable
lengths varies and in some cases between 3 to 5 meters. There are pairs of jumper
cables installed for each RRU.

The jumper cable terminated to RRU ports must be arranged in such a way that the
slack is enough to handle the wind load and not putting the cable at risk for damage due
to excessive bending radius. The following shall be observed for jumper cable
installation:

➢ Jumper cables shall be properly connected to antenna, RRU and feeder cables.
➢ Jumper cables shall be of correct length, has sensible routing and properly labeled
at both ends (technology/ bands and sector no.). Label orientation shall always
read away from the connector.
➢ Each jumper must be labelled using an outdoor type printed sticker or plastic
embossed label.
➢ Excess jumpers can be fastened on the antenna support structure/ tower leg, and
mounting pole using stainless steel metal hose clamps (instead of outdoor plastic/
vinyl cable ties).
➢ Drip loop on jumper cables connected to antenna and RRU shall be considered to
avoid tension on jumper connectors and prevent water sipping however, minimum
cable bending radius shall be observed.
➢ Jumper cable connector sealing must be – 2 layers of electrical tape, followed by 3
layers of rubber tape and 3 layers of electrical tape. Complete the sealing by using
cable tie to seal both ends of the tape.

Feeder Cables

Feeder cables allows the RF signal to pass between the Remote Radio Unit (RRU) and
antennas. Installation requires thorough care and proper handling as the cable is fragile
from damage or dents that results to high VSWR. Pair of feeder cables shall be used for
each sector for each band. Routing and fixing shall be done as follows:

➢ Feeder cables run and arrangement on tower outdoor cable ladder support shall be
from left to right- sector 1 on the leftmost followed by sector 2 then sector 3.
➢ Feeder cables shall be fastened along tower outdoor cable ladder support using
feeder clamps and spacing shall vary between 1m to 1.2m.
➢ Feeder cables both ends shall be properly flared with connectors and shall be
properly terminated to jumper cables.
➢ Feeder cables shall not exceed the required bending radius at some points where
bending is required.
➢ Each feeder cable must be labeled using an outdoor type printed sticker or plastic
embossed labeled at both ends (technology/ bands and sector no.). Label
orientation shall always read away from the connector.
➢ Feeder and jumper cable connectors shall be sealed with– 2 layers of electrical
tape, followed by 3 layers of rubber tape and 3 layers of electrical tape. Complete
the sealing by using cable tie to seal both ends of the tape.

5.4 EQUIPMENT AND FEEDER EARTHING

Earth Bar/ Busbar

An earth bar/ busbar, firmly and continuously fixed up to the Antenna Support Structure/
Tower, shall be provided for earthing the feeder cables below all RF antennas and
possible for RRU’s, Dual Band Combiners and Band Pass Filters.

Similarly, another earth bar/ busbar shall be provided and firmly connected just before
the outdoor horizontal cable ladder support for earthing all feeder cables prior to bend
going to porthole and possible for RRUs, Dual Band Combiners and Band Pass Filters
when installed near Antenna Support Structure/ Tower base.

Another earth bar/ busbar shall be provided for earthing all equipment such as BTS
Cabinet/ Rack, DCDU/ DCPDB, BBU, Rectifier Cabinet, GPS surge suppressor, etc.
This earth bar/ busbar shall be fixed inside the equipment room just below porthole or
adjacent with the equipment.

All earth bars/ busbars shall be connected via copper down conductor terminated to
main ground pit.

➢ Earth bar/ busbar shall be 500mm x 75mm, 6mm thick copper, 32 holes of 10mm
diameter with down conductor (50 sq.mm copper wire, green) bonded directly to
main ground pit.
➢ If additional earth bar/ busbar is required, run a new down conductor directly to
main ground (no parallel tapping to existing earth bar/ bus bar).

Grounding Cables

Grounding cable from the BTS Cabinet/ Rack, DCDU/ DCPDB, BBU, Rectifier Cabinet
and GPS surge suppressor shall be routed properly along the indoor cable ladder going
to indoor earth bar/ busbar located below or adjacent to porthole, while RRU’s, Dual
Band Combiners and Band Pass Filters grounding cable shall be routed along the tower
members towards the outdoor earth bar/ busbar. Installation of grounding shall comply
the following:

➢ Equipment earthing shall be installed according to vendor/ manufacturer


requirement or approved TSSR.
➢ Grounding cable strands shall be inserted properly and observe exposed strands
outside the terminal lug prior to crimping.
➢ Terminal lug must be properly crimp on the grounding cable without reducing the
strands.
➢ Use correct size of terminal lugs and crimp with right crimping tool.
➢ Terminal lug base shall be covered with shrinkable tube after crimping.
➢ Only one grounding cable must be terminated on every single port/ hole of the
earth bar/ busbar. For grounding cables leading downwards (from the RRUs), fix
the routing using metal hose clamps or cable clips instead of plastic cable ties to
support the weight of all cables.
➢ Each grounding cable located outdoor must be labeled using an outdoor type
printed sticker or plastic embossed and label at earth bars/ busbars end
(equipment/ device name, technology/ bands and sector no.). Label orientation
shall always read away from the lug.
➢ Each grounding cable located indoor must be labeled using EZ/ Dymo white sticker
or plastic embossed and label at earth bars/ busbars end (equipment/ device name
and no.). Label orientation shall always read away from the lug.

Grounding Kit

A vendor supplied grounding kit shall be used for feeder cables grounding. Three
grounding points shall be installed- above the antenna support structure/ tower, before
the outdoor horizontal cable support and before cable entry to porthole. Grounding cable
routing and termination shall be straight and directly to the to earth bar/ busbar with
enough slack. Provide weatherproofing whenever necessary for all feeder cable
groundings.

5.5 POWER SUPPLY


Rectifier
An important part of RAN deployment is its power supply system. Operation depends
on the quality of power supply and on the operational reliability of the increasingly
complex equipment and devices associated.

➢ Proper handling of Rectifier Cabinet, shall be free from scratches, dent,


misalignment, etc.
➢ Install Rectifier Cabinet as specified on approved floor plan or TSSR.
➢ Base shall be floor mounted and torqued to specs.
➢ Rectifier Cabinet shall be properly aligned and leveled.
➢ Unused rectifier module and PIU slots shall be covered with dummy plates/ panels.
➢ If rectifier comes with door, shall be properly fitted.
➢ Unused cable entry access holes shall be properly covered.
➢ Rectifier Cabinet grounding shall be properly connected to earth bar/ busbar.
➢ Rectifier Cabinet shall be properly labeled.
➢ Each rectifier module or PIUs shall be properly inserted and tightened in their
respective positions.
➢ Rectifier AC input shall be connected to ACPD circuit breaker according to vendor/
manufacturer specs.

➢ Rectifier DC output shall be connected to DCDU/ DCPDB, DC cable shall be color


coded as Blue (-) and Black (+).
➢ Rectifier DCPDB shall be properly labeled according to type/ brand:

• Huawei Rectifier- using EZ/ Dymo white/ yellow sticker label, size 12 and
shall be in an upward orientation attached on each circuit breaker and
plastic embossed label on each DC cable (Figure 13a and 13b).
• Eltek Rectifier- using EZ/ Dymo white/ yellow sticker label, size 12 and shall
be in an upward orientation located below the circuit breakers (Figure 14).

➢ DC cables terminated to DCPDB circuit breakers shall use cable shoe lugs.

Batteries
The power supply system has a battery backup to ensure proper equipment operation
during power outages. The battery bank consists of one or several battery strings
depending on the required capacity and backup time.

➢ The battery bank shall be mounted in the system cabinet, in a battery cabinet, or in
a separate battery racks.
➢ Every battery cell shall be properly connected in series using vendor/ manufacturer
supplied connecting plate, bolts shall be tightened in torched specs and secured
each terminal with cover.
➢ Each battery string shall be connected to the rectifier using vendor/ manufacturer
supplied battery cables.
➢ Each battery string connection at the rectifier is to have its own discrete disconnect
fuse/ Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) connecting the string to the charging DC
supply.
➢ All DC power system cablings shall be installed using methods such as cable
ladder/ tray, secured with cable ties/ laces.
➢ All DC power system cablings shall be properly labeled.
➢ DC power system cabling conductor material shall be copper.

5.6 ANCILLARIES
Connectors, Lugs and Clamps
Connectors shall be handled, assembled and applied according to the specifications of
the manufacturer. Connections shall be thoroughly and securely tightened with the
torque specified by the manufacturer and are properly sealed. All Antenna ports and RF
connectors should be weatherproofed.

➢ The antenna system test are performed before connectors are sealed.
➢ Connector sealing must be – 2 layers of electrical tape, followed by 3 layers of
rubber tape and 3 layers of electrical tape.
➢ Electric tape (insulation tape) - 80% overlapped for upper and lower connector.
➢ Rubber tape (self-fusing tape) - 50% overlapped for upper and lower connector.
➢ Complete the sealing by using cable tie to seal both ends of the tape.

termination in RAN installation. It varies according to the size of cable. Requires the
following for proper assembling to minimize any cable loose connection:

➢ Preferably have inspection hole.
➢ Conductor shall be fully inserted on lug base, without gaps/ expose wire strands.
➢ Number of crimping vary on lug base length.
➢ Cover with shrinkable tube when crimping is done.

Weatherproofing
All exposed RF connections and earthing points in exterior locations shall be made
weatherproof. This shall be done with one of the following methods as per
recommendation and specification of the manufacturer of the cable, the connectors and
the earthing kits:

Cables that are stored on site or other exterior locations, awaiting fitment of connections
shall be secured to prevent any ingress of water, moisture, mud or debris by proper
temporary capping.

Labeling and Marking


All cables and equipment used for RAN installation requires proper labeling with correct
information printed to it. This enables to easily identify the equipment and the cable
connection from one terminating point to another. Thus, avoiding confusion and errors
whilst doing such activity. Minimum requirement for labeling and marking are as follows:
➢ Using vendor supplied labeling for outdoor application, material shall be weather
resistant type printed sticker or plastic embossed label.
➢ For indoor application, shall be printed white/ yellow label.
➢ Labeling shall be visible and readable when placed on equipment or cable.
➢ Orientation shall always read away from the connector/ lug.
