PCA-Political Frame Worksheet


Worksheet Objectives:
1. Describe the political frame
2. Apply the political frame to your personal case situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

The situation at the social media giant (Twitter) is that the company has been sold to a

new owner that proves to be controversial. A large portion of the current staff have been fired

by the new owner in effort to facilitate the restructuring of the company. My role within the

company is the Human Resources Manager and I am responsible for assisting the Chief

Executive Officer (CEO) with the restructure and hiring of key positions. I must work

together with the board of directors and a team of executives to ensure that we put the right

people in the right places to support the vision of Twitter. Another part to the dilemma is that

Twitter must develop a plan that prevent users from leaving Twitter because of technical

issues and the potential for offensive content being allowed on the platform.

2) Describe how the politics of the organization influenced the situation.

For this scenario, the power shift has changed from previous ownership once Elon

Musk took the company over. Many of the executive team and other lower-level workers

do not seem to be fond of how he inserts his dominance over decision making. This

makes it hard for me as the human resources manager to find qualified employees that are

willing to put up with such an aggressive personality. While the lower-level workers may

feel powerless by being faced with the options of working long hours or quitting all

together.

When the previous CEO was in charge, people felt more relaxed, and this gave

the image of an environment conducive to workers being able to give their opinions and

speaking freely. Now that the CEO has come aboard the climate has completely changed.

Employees are not nervous about what they say and how they say it. The overall situation

presents yet another challenge of filling essential roles for the company. The public has a

negative view on the direction that Twitter is headed.

3) Recommend how you would use organizational politics for an alternative course of
action regarding your case.

To change up the climate of Twitter I would recommend to Elon Musk that it

would be wise to slowly work into the organization to gain employees trust before being

hard on them. I feel that this would allow the employees to feel more at ease when

changes need to be made. Not to mention this option also makes it easier for me as the

human resources manager to fill positions and keep the ones in place that are beneficial.

It would be much easier to lead by persuasion versus fear.

As another option, I would advertise for new positions that explains the need for

people who are flexible and able to operate in a high paced, high stress environment. My

thoughts behind this is that it gives honest insight as to what incoming personnel can

expect working under Elon Musk. I feel this will help with attracting the right people and

retention once hired on. These two recommendations would have to work together to be

successful.

4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned
about this frame.

Now that I have read through the political frame and what this entails, I would do

some things a little different than before. The first thing is to work closely with the new

CEO to gain understanding of his vison and where he plans to take the company. This

will assist me in tailoring my recruitment efforts. I learned that it is essential to set the

company up for long term success. As I mentioned in a previous paper, I must be firm

with speaking my thoughts on how we can improve as a company. Hiring the right people

to facilitate changes is crucial.

Other than the change mentioned above, I would do everything else the same. I

feel that a strategy must be developed to portray to the public that the company is in good

hands. Vision and strategy go hand in hand and I would have to pay close attention to

Elon Musk’s intentions. This frame has given me insight as to what aspects of

organizational politics to pay attention to and how to implement them into my situation.
