1) A drive has the following parameters:

𝑇 = 150 – 0.1 𝑁, N-m, where N is the speed in rpm.
Load torque Tl = 100 N-m
Initially the drive is operating in steady state. The characteristics of the load torque are changed
to 𝑇𝑙 = − 100N-m. Calculate initial and final equilibrium speeds.
2) A motor is used to drive a hoist. Motor characteristics are given by
Quadrants I, II and IV : 𝑇 = 200 – 0.2 𝑁, N-m
Quadrants II, III and IV : 𝑇 = − 200 – 0.2 𝑁, N-m
Where N is the speed in rpm.
When the hoist is loaded, the net load torque Tl = 100 N-m,and when it is unloaded
𝑇𝑙 = − 80 N-m. Obtain the equilibrium speeds for operation in all the four quadrants.
3) A motor drives four loads, two have rotational motion and two translational motion. Moment of
inertia of the motor is 1.2 kg-m2. Motor runs at a speed of 1000 rpm. Following are the details about
the four loads.
Load Type of motion Speed Inertia/mass Torque/force
I Rotational 200 rpm 7 kg-m2 10 N-m
II Rotational 200 rpm 5 kg-m2 6 N-m
III Translational 10 m/s 10 kg 20 N
IV Translational 10 m/s 20 kg 30 N

Calculate the equivalent inertia of the system referred to the motor shaft and power rating of the
motor assuming negligible loss in the transmission system.
4) A weight of 500 kg is being lifted up at a uniform speed of 1.5 m/s by a winch driven by a motor
running at a speed of 1000 rpm. The moments of inertia of the motor and winch are 0.5 and 0.3 kg-
m2respectively. Calculate the motor torque and the equivalent moment of inertia referred to the
motor shaft. In the absence of weight, motor develops a torque of 100 N-m when running at 1000
rpm.
5) In the mechanism shown in Fig. 1, motor drives the winch drum through a reduction gear with a
gear tooth ratio 0.1. The friction torque at winch shaft is 15 N-m and at motor shaft 10 N-m. Motor
speed is 1500 rpm. Calculate the equivalent moment of inertia of the drive referred to motor shaft
and motor torque if gears have an efficiency of 90%.

6) A horizontal conveyor belt moving at a uniform speed of 1.2 m/s transports material at the ratio of
100 tonnes/hr. Belt is 200 m long and driven by a motor at 1200 rpm.
a) determine the load inertia referred to the motor shaft.
b) Calculate the torque that motor should develop to accelerate the belt from standstill to full
speed in 8 sec. Moment of inertia of the motor is 0.1 kg-m2.
7) Heating time constant of a 30 HP motor is 90 minutes. If the motor is run continuously on full load,
it attains a maximum steady stat temperature rise of 40℃. Calculate the half-hour rating of the motor
for this temperature rise. Assume that the losses are proportional to the square of the load and the
motor cools down completely between each load cycle.
8) A drive has the following parameters: J = 10 kg-m2, 𝑇 = 15 + 0.05 𝑁, N-m and
𝑇𝑙 = 5 + 0.06𝑁, N-m, where N is the speed in rpm. Initially the drive is working in steady state.
Now the drive is braked by electrical braking. Torque of the motor in braking is given by 𝑇 =
−10 – 0.04 𝑁, N-m. Calculate time taken by the drive to stop.
9) A drive has the following parameters: J = 1 kg-m2,𝑇 = 15 – 0.01 𝑁, N-m and Passive load torque
𝑇𝑙 = −0.005𝑁, N-m; where N is the speed in rpm.
Initially the drive is working in steady state. Now it is to be reversed. For this motor characteristics
is altered such that 𝑇 = 15 – 0.01 𝑁, N-m for positive and as well as negative values of N.
Calculate the reversal time.
10) If one hour rating is of a machine is √3 times the continuous rating and if the steady state
temperature rise for one hour rating is twice for the normal load, find the ratio of iron losses to
copper losses at full load.
11) Fig. 2 shows plot of speed vs torque. Comment on the stability of operating points A, B, C and D.

Fig. 2
12) Speed – torque curves of motor under different operations are shown in Fig. 3. Draw load curves
which will give stable operation with the portions of characteristics marked AB and BC

Fig. 3

13) Obtain the equilibrium points and determine their steady state stability when motor and load torques
are 𝑇 = (−1 − 2𝜔𝑚 ) and 𝑇𝑙 = −3√𝜔𝑚
14) A motor running continuously on full load has a temperature rise of 20℃. Heating time constant is
60 minutes. How long the motor could be run at twice the continuously rated output without
overheating. Maximum efficiency of motor at 80% of full load.
15) Base on equivalent torque, estimate the kW rating of a 1000 rpm motor used for driving an
equipment with the following load torque cycle.
i) First 30 s, torque is constant at 50 N-m
ii) Next 40 s, torque varies linearly with time from 40 N-m to 20 N-m
iii) Next 20 s, toque is constant at 10 N-m
