IV. PROCEDURES

A. Introduction Being able to communicate effectively is perhaps the most

important of all life skills. It is what enables us to pass
information to other people, and to understand what is said to
us.

Communication, at its simplest, is the act of transferring

information from one place to another. It may be vocally (using
voice), written (using printed or digital media such as books,
magazines, websites or emails), visually (using logos, maps,
charts or graphs) or non-verbally (using body language,
gestures and the tone and pitch of voice). In practice, it is often
a combination of several of these.

On the other hand, in giving opinions or point of view whether

written and oral/verbal communication is applied. Thus,
keeping this in practice will eventually mold a person to become
effective speaker.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

Examine images which present particular viewpoints, e.g.
stereotypes (gender, age, cultural), opinions on an issue

Look closely at the details of the illustration below. This visual

art shows the message of the poem “The Tree of Life” by the
author.

Coconut trees have been labeled or stereotyped as “Tree of Life”

because of their importance in human life.

Read the poem below and answer the questions that follow.

The Tree of Life

By Blesita P. Beronio
Your existence on earth is very important,
Nobody think of you as an annoyance.
The leaves of yours serve as canopy,
That protects every living creature just like me.

Your towering trunk that serves as our shelter,

Bringing people’s lives to become better.
Those edible fruits with its meat and water,
They quench our thirst and feed our hunger.

Your roots that crawl in any direction,

Prevents flood in the entire region.
Truly you are of great help in the community,
For every part of you can be used by many.

1. What do you think is the poem about?

2. What do they give us?
3. Do they need to be protected just like human beings?
4. Why are coconut trees labelled as “tree of life”?
5. What is the point of view of the author?

B. Development The way one gives his/her opinions or perceptions about

mothers is known as viewpoint. Viewpoints vary from person to
person. The common perceptions on the characteristics of a
mother is known as stereotyping.

There are ways by which viewers can be influenced. Among

these are stereotypes and point of view.

Point of view is the angle from which the story is told. If

the story is written in the first person point of view, the
reader becomes aware of all the thought and feeling of the
character. In the second person point of view, the reader
feels as though he or she is a character in the story, while
in the third person point of view, the narrator tells the
reader everything about the characters and events. It also
means that there are may be more than one way of
looking things.

Second Person you, your, yours

Stereotypes are results of incomplete or distorted information

accepted as fact without question. A stereotype is simply a
widely held belief that an individual is a member of a certain
group based on characteristics.

Coconut trees have always been labelled or stereotyped as

“tree of life” because of their importance to human life.

Stereotypes are beliefs that all people within the same gender,
age or cultural group will act alike and will share the same
viewpoints and attitudes. They ignore unique identity which is
why it is considered as a form of discrimination. They are
considered as exaggerated beliefs and generalizations without
allowing individual personalities, which create positive and
negative acceptance and effects to different groups. They may
be true to some but not to all.
