LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET 2 – Slink it Up

Directions:
You will need a slinky and a tape in this activity. If you do not have these materials try to
look around your things that can be a substitute for it.
Tape one end of the slinky to a wall and hold the other end. First, move backwards while
holding the end of slinky. Observe what happens.
After doing this, kindly move your hand upward and downward to produce some wave motion
in the slinky. Observe what happens.
Write down your observation below:

Observation:
● When I moved backwards while holding the end of the slinky, I observed that the slinky
stretched out and produced a wave-like motion that traveled from my hand to the wall.
● When I moved my hand upward and downward, I noticed that the wave motion in the
slinky became more pronounced and the waves traveled up and down the slinky. The
movement of my hand created a disturbance in the slinky that caused the waves to
propagate through it.
● I also observed that the speed of the waves in the slinky was constant and that the
wavelength of the waves increased as I moved my hand higher and lower.

Let us Practice!
On the graphic at right, label the following parts
of a wave: One Wavelength, Half-wavelength,
amplitude, crest and through.
a. How many wavelengths are represented in
the wave?
● There is one wavelength present in
the figure shown.
b. What is the amplitude of the wave shown?
● The amplitude of the wave shown is 5 centimeters.

EVALUATION
1. A transverse wave is transporting energy from east to west. The particles of the
medium will move D. both northward and southward.
2. A wave is transporting energy from left to right. The particles of the medium are
moving. back and forth in a leftward and rightward direction. This type of wave is known
as a D. longitudinal

3. Use the grids below to draw the sinusoidal wave with an amplitude of 1 cm and a
wavelength of 2 cm. Be sure to label the y-axis to indicate the measurement scale.

4. You are standing 1 meter from a squawking parrot. If you move to a distance three
meters away, the sound intensity will be what fraction of its original value?
● The intensity of sound decreases with the square of the distance from the source. So if
you move from a distance of 1 meter to a distance of 3 meters, the intensity of the sound
decreases by a factor of (3/1)^2 = 9. Therefore, the sound intensity will be 1/9 of its
original value at a distance of 3 meters.
5. Compare the intensity of light 2 meters away from a lit match to the intensity 6 meters away
from the match.

● By understanding that the intensity of light decreases as the distance from the source
increases. This decrease follows an inverse square law, meaning that the intensity of light
decreases proportional to the square of the distance from the source.
Therefore, if the intensity of light 2 meters away from a lit match is I, the intensity 6
meters away would be I/(6/2)^2 = I/9. This means that the intensity of light 6 meters
away from the lit match would be 1/9 of its original intensity at a distance of 2 meters.
