Module 1. PRE-TEST

1. Distinguish Trends from Fads.

-To be able to distinguish a trend from a fad, we need to identify the period of time an
idea has occurred and its acceptability in society. If the idea stayed for at least a
decade or longer and is widely accepted or popular, then the idea is a trend.

2. Give an example of a Trend and a Fad.

-An example of a trend I can give is pets. Owning pets have been a long running trend
that dated way back 30,000 years ago. The first domesticated animal by humans were
dogs. Which was a case proven in a burial site in Czech Republic, where an
archaeologist discovered a dog’s skeleton buried with a bone carefully placed in his
mouth, thus researchers believe that a human inserted it after the dog’s death.
Nowadays, people’s pets have grown more unique and diverse. There are now people
owning raccoons, snakes, and even rats! Many families around the world own
different kinds and breeds of animals, and they treat them like family. Owning pets
has gotten involved in many industries, such as food manufacturing industries and
clothing industries. It also has a history and plays a big part in society’s culture and
even individual lives.
One example of a Fad I could give is the Tamagotchi. It is a digital pet in a handheld
egg-shaped gadget. The Tamagotchi’s first day of sales hit more than 70 million. It
peaked in the mid-year of 1997 up to the early 2000s. But the demand for these
products have gotten less and less as people focused more on different gadgets such as
cellphones.

3. How do you spot an emerging Trend?

-It’s not hard to sport an emerging trend especially in these modern times where news
and information spreads faster than ever. You can spot an emerging trend when it has
history and it has a strong impact on the people, and when it has great potential to
create a major change in society.
