The Importance
The Importance
At its roots, architecture exists to create the physical environment in which people live, but architecture
is more than just the built environment, it's also a part of our culture. It stands as a representation of
how we see ourselves, as well as how we see the world.
Architectural design is primarily concerned with functionality. A building has to meet the needs of the
person or people using it. Safety is also a primary concern; a new building needs to be structurally
sound, designed to withstand the test of time and built in-line with current building regulations.
Fundamental building design still plays a big role in overall building performance. On a typical building
project, building shape/form alone can influence energy use by 10 to 15%. Combine that with the
influence of glazing, which can often influence building performance in the 15-25% range.
Architectural design is a discipline that focuses on covering and meeting the needs and demands, to
create living spaces, using certain tools and especially, creativity. Therefore, the aim is to combine the
technological and the aesthetic, despite the general belief that architecture is only a technological task.
Design drawings are used to develop and communicate ideas about a developing design: In the early
stages of the project phase (during the design and tender process) they might simply dewmonstrate to
the client the ability of a particular design team to undertake the design.

But, at the end of the day, the MOST important part of architecture is one thing and one thing only:
requirements. Without requirements, you have no idea if you are actually designing a solution that
matters.

The elements of design are the fundamental aspects of any visual design which include shape, color,
space, form, line, value, and texture. Graphic designers use the elements of design to create an image
that can convey a certain mood, draw the eye in a certain direction, or evoke a number of feelings.
Everything you can see has a design. When you describe something you see, you use words that tell
about the lines, shapes, colors, textures, and spaces. Line, shape, color, texture, and space are the basic
elements of design.
In addition to shape, there are six visual properties that define form:
Size. The width, length, and depth of a form – its dimensions – are what help determine its
proportions. ...
Texture. ...
Position. ...
Orientation. ...
Circle. ...
A number of aspects must be considered in order to analyze or design an architectural form, including
shape, mass / size, scale, proportion, rhythm, articulation, texture, color, and light.
the main elements defining a space are walls, roofs, floors, coloumns and beams. Interior design
considers a deeper definition of space concerned with its layout, furnishing and planning.
Positive space refers to the subject or areas of interest in an artwork, such as a person's face or figure in
a portrait, the objects in a still life painting, or the trees in a landscape painting. Negative space is the
background or the area that surrounds the subject of the work.
Negative space is the space around and between the subject of an image. Negative spaces are actual
shapes that share edges with the positive shape. Just as important as the object itself, negative space
helps to define the boundaries of the positive space and brings balance to a composition.
