Women’s Rights

By: Isaac Lopez

Many women had to face challenges in order to gain the same freedoms as men, like voting in
the early days. During the women’s rights movement, they fought for suffrage. However, this was not
an easy task back then and they faced many issues and challenges to overcome and overthrow to gain
their freedoms.

During the Women’s Rights movement, issues came along. Women struggled to get their point
across America, and convincing others to agree with their statement was a hassle. Women’s Rights
activist organized small local protest and wrote letters to local newspaper editors. According to Source
1” We need to write letters to the editors of the Houston newspapers. We could just send copies to
Austin as well,” and “Perhaps we could start branch organizations in other cities. We could begin with
letters to key women in each city, inviting them to be part of this effort”. This shows that women were
trying to protest and obtain the same rights as men. The issue is that these are only small protest in
local areas, this would not get their point across America nationally. According to Source 1” I think we
aren’t seeing the big picture. We aren’t thinking of all the women” shows that local newspapers and
local protest was not working as efficiently as planned.

But how did women challenge the issues they were faced with? Women had to challenge the
old way of believing that men should have more privileges than woman and debate the ones who
believed in this manner. Women argued that the Woman’s Rights movement is part of the growth of
the modern civilization in America, and for this to commence, women would need to be given more
rights than what they had previously. Women not only wanted more rights, but they also needed it.
Equal pay, voting rights, to work in any department they wish to specialize in, etc. Women didn’t just
fight for rights, they fought to be independent. Women wanted to work for a living and contribute to
society, not live as housewives for the rest of their lives. According to Source 2 “The war has deprived
so many thousands of women of their natural protectors, that everything must be thought of that may
possibly open a way for their self-support.” This is why many feminists are fighting for these rights. Not
only was it unfair, but during the war, when the husbands of the wives were drafted, women had to
learn how to become independent and learn to survive in society.

Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution explains that most modern organisms developed
from ancestral organisms through natural selection.

Natural selection has four main parts: overproduction, variation, selection, and
adaptation.

Adaptations and genetic variations can allow species to survive and reproduce.
