BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Second language acquisition is the process by which people learned a

second language. With second language learning, the learners can improve

communication and can be globally prepared.

This study is anchored on the Proximal Development theory.

Zone of proximal development is the study that refers to the abilities of the

learners that can be performed with guidance. Learners can acquire and improve

second language acquisition when they are exposed to it through the help of experts.

ZPD argues that teachers and parents should take into account the child’s potential

to learn the language.

Based on Constructive Theory. Vygotsky stated that learners acquire

language through social exposure and interactions. As per Vygotsky, intellectual

ability also plays an important role in language acquisition. A child becomes able to

develop inner, private speech by interacting with the surrounding, it is trough the

inner speech that the child is able to distinguish between language and thought, and

is eventually able to express their thoughts. In ZPD, the more the child is expose to

their surroundings and be guided with the experts, they can easily acquire language

trough imitation.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study assesses the impact of second language learning among

Grade 6 students. The finding will be the basis of the effectiveness of second

language acquisition.
Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. What are the advantages of a second language?

2. How can it help the learners to be globally prepared?

3. What are the factors that can help in second language learning?

4. What are the learning methods that best fit second language learning?

5. Why is it important to acquire a second language?

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter contains a review of related literature which the

researchers based for further information on the study.

RELATED LITERATURE

Ellis (1995) sees the process of second language acquisition (SLA) as a

complex one, involving many interrelated factors. It indicates the learning of an

additional language after acquiring the first language. SLA is the product of many

factors relating to the learner on the one hand and the learning situation on the other.

It is not a uniform and predictable phenomenon. In addition, there is not only one

way that learners acquire knowledge of a second language. Different learners in

different situations learn a L2 in different ways. Besides, second language

acquisition refers to all aspects of language that the language learners need to

acquire and master. With regard to the acquisition of lexis, there have been relatively
few studies in this area. The focus has been on how L2 learners acquire grammatical

sub-systems.

According to Selinker (1972), there are psychological structures latent in the

brain which is activated when one attempts to learn a second language. In other

words, the attempts of the learner to produce meaningful utterances in the TL has

resulted in the existence of a separate linguistic system which is called

‘interlanguage’. It is because the set of utterances produced by the learner will

probably contain some elements of structure which parallel those of the learner’s

native language and some which parallel those of the target or second language.

The learner is most likely not aware of where his meaningful performance does not

parallel that of the target language, though he is in the process of becoming aware of

it as long as he continues to learn. According to Selinker (1972: 48), “successful

second language learning, for most learners, is the reorganization of linguistic

materials from an IL to identify with a particular TL”.

Chapter 3
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter contains the method and the procedures that are used by the

researchers to come up with the result.

DESIGN

This study deals with experimental research design. An experimental

process of research uses a quantitative method to ensure the reliability and validity

of the study.

The experimental method which the researcher conducts a survey to know

the languages acquired by the respondents. The researcher uses a questionnaire

that can help assess the impact of second language learning. The goal of this study

is to give information about second language acquisition.

The researcher used quantitative research in which the data was based on

the number of respondents. Thus, the research found that this design is appropriate

for the study.

INSTRUMENT
The study uses a survey questionnaire that consists of five items. The

questions are based on second language learning.

The study also used a checklist for the researcher to assess the L2 of the

respondents.

ENVIRONMENT

This study is conducted in Banbang, Elementary School.

The research was conducted only at Grade 6 level, wich has 4 sections. Te

study is conducted specifically in Grade 6 ALEXANDRITE students which consist of

27 students under Mrs. Antonnet Dugho. The researcher chooses Bangbang

Elementary School because they already used the mother tongue language, this

study will assess the impact of L2 in communication.

DATA COLLECTION METHOD

The researcher took the following procedure. First, the researcher sent

a letter to the Grade 6 ALEXANDRITE Teacher to allow the researcher to conduct

the study and gather information. Second, the researcher explains to the

respondents what the study is all about. Third, the researcher conducts a survey to

assess the respondent’s acquire language. Lastly, the researcher gathered and

interpret the data as well as summarized the finding.

PERCENTAGE

The table shows the response of the respondents and it shows that

42% of the them strongly Agree that learning second language can help them

understand the language used, adapt the culture of other through leaning their

language, can find better job opportunities, can improve their vocabulary and can

enhance their linguistic ability, while 30% of them agree and 28% slightly agree.

CONCLUSION
Based on the findings of the study, second language acquisition has a

big impact to communication and help the learners to be globally prepared. Learners

can develop their communication if they are more expose to language.
