LABORATORY ACTIVITY 4
CHI-SQUARE GOODNESS OF FIT TEST

1. A researcher was interested in investigating the influence of eye size on

attraction. Photos of two different people (who were determined by
experts to be similar attractiveness and eye size) were used in the study.
The photos were manipulated prior to the study so that one of the two
people had moderately larger eyes (the photos were counterbalanced so
that one person had larger eyes for half of the participants and the other
person had larger eyes for the other half of the participants). Eighty
people viewed both photos, indicating which of the two they found more
attractive. The data is presented below.

a. State the null and alternative hypothesis

Null Hypothesis (Ho):
There is no significant difference between the observed
frequency and the expected frequency.
Alternative Hypothesis (Ha):
There is a significant difference between the observed
frequency and
and the expected frequency.

b. Write the result of the study.

➢ Since the p-value = 0.000008 < 0.05, we reject the null hypothesis in
favor of the alternative hypothesis.
➢ Thus there is a significant difference between the observed
frequencies and expected frequencies. The assumption of the
researcher that eye size influences the attractiveness of a person is
not correct, χ2 (1, N = 80) = 20.00, p < 0.05.
2. A market researcher investigated whether people perceive a difference in
the picture quality of plasma and LCD televisions. Shoppers at a local
warehouse store were shown a movie trailer on both a plasma and LCD
television and were asked to indicate which of the two televisions had the
better picture quality. The choices of the 65 shoppers included in the
study are provided below.

a. State the null and alternative hypothesis

Null Hypothesis (Ho):
There is no significant difference between the observed
frequency and the expected frequency.
Alternative Hypothesis (Ha):
There is a significant difference between the observed
frequency and
and the expected frequency.

b. Write the result of the study.

➢ Since the p-value = 0.535 > 0.05, we accept the null hypothesis.
➢ Thus there is no significant difference between the observed
frequencies and expected frequencies. The assumption of the
market researcher that people perceive a difference in the picture
quality of plasma and LCD televisions is correct, χ2 (1, N = 65) =
0.385, p > 0.05.7
