Because it facilitated the movement of cultures, goods, and ideas, the Silk Road assisted in the
development of globalization. Globalization was aided greatly by the spread of religion and civilizations
over the Silk Road. Along the Silk Road, Christianity from the West, Islam from the Middle East, and
Buddhism from the East soon interacted.
b. Age of Discovery -
Geographic travel in the late Middle Ages eventually led to the Age of Discovery, a loosely defined
European historical period spanning the 15th to the 18th centuries during which significant foreign
adventure became a powerful element in European culture and globalization. The Age of Discovery, as
well as later European exploration, enabled for the mapping of the globe, culminating in a new
worldview and the meeting of disparate civilizations. Simultaneously, new diseases spread, decimating
communities that had not previously come into contact with the Old World, particularly Native
Americans.
c. Industrial Revolution -
2. Explain why only after the collapse of the former Soviet Union that globalization is considered to be
truly a global phenomenon.
The world grew increasingly interconnected after the Soviet Union collapsed in 1989 and the Cold War
ended in 1991. This is because the communist bloc countries began to integrate into the global market
economy after being purposely excluded from the capitalist West. Trade and investment grew, while
migratory and cultural exchange obstacles were reduced. Technological advancements, such as mobile
phones and, particularly, the internet, have aided globalization by bringing individuals from all over the
world together. The World Wide Web connects billions of people and devices, allowing for the
interchange of goods, services, cultural products, information, and ideas.
