    The East Newark Barnett Shale Field in Texas has seen tremendous growth, with the number of wells increasing from 1,800 in 2003 to over 11,600 today. Gas production from the field has also increased substantially and now accounts for 4.5 billion cubic feet per day, representing 6% of total gas production in the lower 48 U.S. states. The field covers an area of around 5,000 square miles in northern Texas.
