Self-Assessment of NBPTS

Directions: For each element, rate yourself in one of the following three categories. Then provide examples of your experiences in the
area of the NBPTS. Finally, identify areas within each domain where you are interested in growing. On the last page, summarize your
strengths and areas of possible growth. Boxes will expand as needed.
 Exploring/Emerging (E/E) - a level of practice in which the teacher relies on ongoing assistance from more experienced colleagues for
support, guidance, and survival. The teacher is moving toward becoming more self-directed and independent in her/his practice.
 Applying (A) - a level of practice in which the teacher is able to provide independent instruction and easily applies what s/he has
learned about educational practice.
 Integrating/Innovating (I/I) - a level of development in which the teacher is fully skilled and confident. The Integrating/Innovating
teacher is contributing to the broader educational community through staff development, research, or publication in professional
journals.

Proposition 1: Teachers are committed to students and their learning. E/E A I/I
1. Teachers Recognize Individual Differences in Their Students and Adjust Their Practice Accordingly
2. Teachers Understand How Students Develop and Learn
3. Teachers Treat Students Equitably
4. Teachers Know Their Mission Transcends the Cognitive Development of Their Students
Three Examples of Proposition 1 Experiences Areas of Interest in Growth
 Teachers Understand How Students Develop and
Learn
 Students in my class are allowed and encouraged
to revise work and redo work in order to ensure
comprehension. In our class, we value mastery and
understanding over perfection.

 Teachers Know their Mission Transcends the
Cognitive Development of Their Students
 My classroom is decorated with love. I have a very
bright and playful environment where I encourage
students to take ownership of the classroom and Understanding How Students Develop and Learn
we practice respect for each other through respect
for our community space.

 Teachers Know their Mission Transcends the
Cognitive Development of Their Students
 I incorporate several lessons in my curriculum that
are focused on social-emotional well-being
including meditation, timed freewriting, and
specific time for reading personal choice books.

5. Teachers Appreciate How Knowledge in Their Subjects is Created, Organized, and Linked to Other
Disciplines
6. Teachers Command Specialized Knowledge of How to Convey a Subject to Students

 I advocated for my department to go to the Annual
Literacy Conference, hosted by the UCI Writing
Project. We were able to go and got a wealth of
knowledge that we are implementing in our
classrooms.

 Teachers Generate Multiple Paths to Knowledge
 Through reflection on my lessons and research, I
have changed lessons and the way that I have
implemented lessons based on their success. Last
year I did a unit where students in my 10th Grade
ELA classes were doing quote journals for each
chapter. It was very successful so I have
incorporated that part of the lesson into the
English 10 Honors class and my English 12 Honors
classes.

 Teachers Generate Multiple Paths to Knowledge
 This year we purchased a program called No Red
Ink. Previously I was using paper-based worksheets
for grammar-based lessons however I am
embracing a hybrid technology type of curriculum
and I am incorporating more technology in my
lessons in order to engage and cater to different
learning styles and modalities.

Proposition 3: Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning. E/E A I/I
1. Teachers Call on Multiple Methods to Meet Their Instructional Goals
2. Teachers Support Student Learning in Varied Settings and Groups
3. Teachers Value Student Engagement
4. Teachers Regularly Assess Student Progress
5. Teachers Engage Students in the Learning Process
Three Examples of Proposition 3 Experiences Areas of Interest in Growth
 Teachers Support Learning in Various Settings and Teachers Engage Students in the Learning Process
Groups
 This year my honors students expressed their
concern that they need to learn more vocabulary.
So I found some vocabulary lists and I introduced
the words to them. At the end of each unit we play
vocabulary Jeopardy. We chose the teams by using
our PBIS rewards app. I do this so that the students
are forced to work in different groups and
collaborate with each other.

 Teachers Value Student Engagement
 Students in my English 10 honors class do a lot of
independent work. About halfway through the
semester, they began a form of play where they

would pretend that they were creating a podcast.
Students would ask engaging thought provoking
questions and they would communicate their
thoughts and feelings in this “podcast” it was
incredibly cute but I also recognized that they were
really engaging in the activity and my classroom
was a place where they could do it. I allowed them
to continue because they were getting their work
done and they were engaging with the material as
well. When he had to have a lecture type of lesson
or a test or a quiz or reading time they were
respectful as well. I feel that letting them do this is
helping their social-emotional skills as well as their
speaking and listening skills.

 Teachers Regularly Assess Student Learning

 Students were particularly motivated to do well on
their STAR tests this semester because advisory
classes created posters to promote the test and the
school was able to host a spirit week and an In and
Out Truck to celebrate student achievement.
Having these results are helping us create
meaningful lessons based on student need.

 Teachers Regularly Assess Student Learning
 Each week we have a minimum of two graded
assignments. I use googleclassroom and No Red Ink
to give students timely feedback on their work.

 Teachers Regularly Assess Student Learning
 We regularly test our students using the Reinsance

Proposition 5: Teachers are Members of Professional Communities E/E A I/I

1. Teachers Collaborate with Other Professionals to Improve School Effectiveness
2. Teachers Work Collaboratively with Families
3. Teachers Work Collaboratively with the Community
Three Examples of Proposition 5 Experiences Areas of Interest in Growth
 Teachers Work Collabortively with Families
 This year I have been using Talking Points to
connect with families. It was working well until
Administration received a call from a parent. They
have asked when we use the APP to be vague and
not give specific information.

 Collaborate with Other Professionals to Improve
Effectiveness
 I have gone to the UCI - Writer Center Professional Teachers Work Collabortively with Families
Devleopment and I will be going to the CATE
conference next week.

 Collaborate with Other Professionals to Improve
Effectiveness
 I work closely with with the History teachers to
align and come up with new ideas for curriculum.

Summary of Strengths and Areas of Possible Growth

I feel that I am strongest in Proposition 1 & 2 ( Teachers are Commited to Students and Their Learning and Teachers know
the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students). I have been focusing on and improving in the 3rd
proposition, Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning. I do fairly well with professional
development but I feel my weakest areas are connecting to families and the community. I am a very reflective person in
general so I feel that i am fairly strong in the 4th proposition “Teachers think systematically about their practices and learn
from experienc.
