Embracing the toe

ENTERTAINMENT ;| ;TOE ;| ;RING

Toe rings were not too common in Uganda in the 80s, but Grace Nakimera 45, says she
first wore them in 2005 on her sister’s wedding. ;

If there were any on the market, I couldn’t afford it and all I wanted was to be
hip.

So, I got a set of little beads, made a ring and rolled it down my toe. I wore open
shoes all the time, showing off how in touch with the times I was.

It was very uncomfortable and it kept sliding up and down, sometimes making it very
difficult to walk.

I had to be careful lest the string came loose. But I wasn’t giving up. Not even
when all the conservative old women I know disapproved. ;

Then my most cruelly can did friend looked at my feet and screwed up his face with
disgust; “Please don’t draw attention to your bad nails. And if you are going to
have to make a fashion statement, get a proper ring!”

I finally came out of the depths I’d shrunk into in time to find toe rings becoming
a hot trend. Mercifully, I have seen none made of beads.

But don’t forget that since most of these rings are gold or silver, the glint on
your toes will draw every body’s attention.
