Sun Shading Devices

Sun shading devices help reduce heat gains, especially during the summer. It provides cooling aid that helps
minimize the use of cooling energy. These devices help occupants feel comfortable despite the natural conditions. With
that, different sun shading devices are available by their use and aesthetics.

Internal Sun Shading Devices- shadings that are accessible from the interior and commonly attached from the above
windows
1. Curtains- The most common sun shading device used in almost every structure especially in residential
buildings. It comes in a variety of lengths, designs, and textures. And not only it is a sun-shading device, but
it can also serve as a decorative item given the designs may be in accordance with personal preference.

2. Roller Blinds- Can be a piece of fabric or commonly stiffened polyester-wrapped on a metal pole in a casing.
The screens operate by tugging of chains the screen roll up or down. Roller blind coverage is more opaque
than some curtains but not all roller blinds have this opaque coverage as it also comes with a variety of
designs. This also gives a modern and minimalistic look for interiors.

3. Blackout Blinds- As the name suggests, these are blinds that have full coverage and totally stop light from
passing through. Blackout blinds are made from tightly woven fabric (polyester or nylon) then produced with
coating fabric with layers of black foam resulting in a blackout effect designed to block external light or sun
light from entering. These are good for rooms that may be used for presentations, events, plays, etc. as some
require total blackout. The look gives a sleek, clean, and minimalistic design. And it operates similarly to roller
blinds.

External Sun Shading Devices- May be referred to as better than internal devices as it is permanently installed or
included and gives a natural aesthetic to the exterior. This includes a variety of projections and may also include
vegetation.
4. Egg-crate- The amalgamation of vertical and horizontal and vertical shading elements. This is perfect for
areas with a hot climate because of the high protection it gives especially the horizontal element protects the
occupants from reflected sun glares.

5. Vertical Louvers- May be known as vertical fin sun breakers. These are purely designed using the vertical
element. Vertical parallel panels, fins, blades, etc. admit minimal light penetration and balances airflow for the
building. Although does not completely block sunlight, it still provides protection. Some vertical louvers are
installed permanently or can be adjusted depending on the installation. This adds support and aesthetic to
the structure. These are made of different materials like wood and metal.

6. Horizontal Louvers- Basically the same as vertical louvers but oriented horizontally. These louvers also allow
light to penetrate and regulates airflow. Also made of a variety of materials and can pe installed permanently
or adjustable.

7. Overhang Shading- Another sun shading device that is like an extended roof unlike the other examples that
are attached to or serve as walls. These are critical as shades provided depend on the angles, how it is
installed. Overhang shadings are also made from a variety of materials, may it be fabric, wood, metal, or
glass. It can be designed to provide full shade or use some vertical and/ or horizontal elements.
