Mean Time Between Failures and Mean Time To Repair are two important KPI's in
plant/machine maintenance.

Mean Time Between Failures = (Total up time) / (number of breakdowns)

Mean Time To Repair = (Total down time) / (number of breakdowns)

"Mean Time" means, statistically, the average time.

In Comp Science..

"Mean Time Between Failures" is literally the average time elapsed from one failure to the
next. Usually people think of it as the average time that something works until it fails and
needs to be repaired (again).

"Mean Time To Repair" is the average time that it takes to repair something after a failure.

Mean time between failures (MTBF) describes the expected time between two failures for a
repairable system, while mean time to failure (MTTF) denotes the expected time to failure
for a non-repairable system.

There are two kinds of failure calculations:

1. Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) is for members of a group of items that are
repaired after failure. The MTBF calculation takes into account repair time. For more
information, look up Mean_time_between_failures . Also,

2. Mean Time to Failure (MTTF) is for members of a group that are not repaired, but are
replaced.

If a product has components, and all components are required for proper operation, and if
you know the MTTF of each component, then you can easily calculate the MTTF of the
product. It is the reciprocal of the sum of the reciprocals of the individual components'
MTTF's. (This is like resistors in parallel.)

MTTF = 1/ sum(1/MTTFn)

The calculation is more complicated when there is redundancy, so that only some, m, of n
of component x, and only j of k of component y are needed for the whole to be

So the standard metric in reliability testing is to measure the “Mean Time to Failure” for a
given level of stress applied. Stress is required to do accelerated life testing.

Once you’ve collected such information in a statistically significant quantity (remember it’s
“Mean”/”Average” time meaning you measure many devices), then you have enough data
to estimate an acceleration factor to predict what the lifetime will be without unusual
stress (i.e. normal operating life).
