PE 03 - INDIVIDUAL/DUAL SPORTS

SPORTS

● It is an activity that requires physical actions and skills where individuals or teams
compete under a set of rules.
● It is a physical contest pursued for goals and challenges they entail.

Classification of Sports

● Individual Sports – played by one participant on each competing side.


● Dual Sports – played by 2 competing pairs.
● Team Sports – played by three or more players.

Types of Elimination
Single Elimination

● Knock-out; or sudden death tournament.


● It is a type of elimination tournament where the loser of each match-up is immediately
eliminated from the tournament.

Advantages

● It is the most direct way to produce the “Best Player”.


● It is simplest, least complicated and fastest method.
● It is attractive when time and ease of operation essential.

Disadvantages

● The player can fail only once and then they are out of the competition.
● No second chance.

Formula

● G = game
● N = number of entries

● G = N-1

Example

● There are 8 competitors in Badminton Tournament.


● G = N-1

= 8-1
=7

BYE

● In tournament, it is preferential of a player or team not paired with a competitor in an


early round and thus automatically to play in the next round.
● It happens when the number of entries /teams does not belong in the number multiple
of 2 or odd number.

Compute the number of games for the following participants in tournament using single and
double elimination:

● Single Elimination
1. 10
2. 15
3. 24

Double Elimination

● The name implies, requires the players to lose twice to be eliminated from the
competition.
● Advantage:
● It gives the athlete the opportunity to compete and makes the consequences of
a single round match less costly than single elimination

Formula
G = 2 (N-1)
Example: There are 4 competing athletes in Discuss Throw. How many games are there if
double elimination system will be used for the tournament?
G = 2 (N-1)
=2( 4-1)
=2 (3)
=6

G = 2 (N-1)

Round Robin Elimination

● It is a type of tournament in which each participant/team plays every other


participant/team participating in the same amount of time.
● All-play-all tournament is a competition in which each contest meets all other
contestants.
Advantage/s

● It allows a guaranteed number of games


● Luck does not play as big factor as an elimination tournament.

Disadvantage/s

● It is not as exciting for the most part.


● The matches in the later half of the tournament could have no impact on the final
outcome of the tournament.
● Teams may not give as much effort for the championship where two teams will
finish the same record.

Round Robin Tie Breaker Rules

● 2- team tie
● Use the point differential between the 2 matches. The team that won by the most
points would be declared as winner.

3 or more team tie

● Check the record of each team against the other teams that have tied. If one team has a
better record. They would be declared as winner.
● Tally up the point differential in each match against the other tied teams. The team
that has the largest points differential should be declared as winner.
● Use total points scored against the other tied games.

Tracking Records

● The team with the best record after all the games have been completed is the winner.

Formula for Round Robin

● G= N( N- 1)/ 2
● Round = N-1

Example
● Suppose there are 4 competing teams in Beach Volleyball tournament. Compute the
number of games
● G = N (N-1)/2

= 4 (4-1)/2
= 4 (3)/2
= 12/2
=6
Exercise

● Compute the number of games for 6 competing teams in Rowing using Round Robin
System. Show the illustration of games for each round.

Identify whether it is a Single elimination, Double Elimination or Round Robin.

1. It allows guaranteed number of games.
