What are the Informatics Applications in Evidence-based Nursing practice?

• Computer Generated Nursing Care Plans

• Clinical Pathways
• Clinical Guidelines
• E-journals

Define & give examples of the following applications:

1. Computer Generated Nursing Care Plans

- These NCPs are products of nursing informatics systems capable of comparing actual
assessment findings of a patient entered into the system versus a preset
database/program that has built-in care plans.
- Examples:
➢ Cerner-Hospital Management System
➢ PointClickCare- specializes in elderly care facilities.
➢ Allscripts- Hospital Management System
➢ eClinicalWorks- Hospital Management System
➢ MEDITECH- Hospital Management System
➢ Indra- available in PH

2. Clinical Pathways
- Clinical pathways (CPWs) are tools used to guide evidence-based healthcare. Their aim
is to translate clinical practice guideline recommendations into clinical processes of care
within the unique culture and environment of a healthcare institution.
- A CPW is a structured multidisciplinary care plan with the following characteristics:
(1) it is used to translate guidelines or evidence into local structures.
(2) it details the steps in a course of treatment or cares in a plan, pathway, algorithm,
guideline, protocol, or other “inventory of actions”; and
(3) it aims to standardize care for a specific clinical problem, procedure, or episode of
healthcare in a specific population.
- Example:
• A clinical pathway for the management of elderly inpatients with malnutrition.
3. Clinical Guidelines
- A.K.A. Clinical Protocols, Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs), Medical Guideline,
Practice Guidelines.
- These are evidenced-based documents that serve as decision-making guidelines
mostly focused on: diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring.
- Are statements that include recommendations intended to optimize patient care that is
informed by a systematic review of evidence and an assessment of the benefits and
harms of alternative care options.
- Developed by governing bodies of a specific field or with deputized authority.
- Examples:
➢ World Health Organization (WHO)–World Alliance for Patient Safety (WHO)
➢ American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN)
➢ Australasian Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (AuSPEN)
➢ Centre for Healthcare Related Infection Surveillance and Prevention (CHRISP)
➢ International Federation of Infection Control (IFIC) European Society for Clinical
Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN)
➢ Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA)

4. E-journals
- E-journals or electronic journals are periodical publications in digital format and can be
found on the internet.
- These are either free access or require a subscription.
- Examples:
➢ American Journal in Critical Care
➢ American Journal of Nursing
➢ International Journal of Nursing Practice
➢ International Journal of Nursing Care
➢ Journal of Clinical Nursing
➢ Nursing Research
➢ Philippine Journal of Nursing
