Subject: Science
Grade: Six
Duration: 3 × 60 mins
Unit Title: Materials – Properties and Uses
Theme: Energy, Force and Matter

Focus Question: What are some properties of common materials and their uses?

Attainment Target:
 Recognize the importance of energy to life processes, everyday life, and the
relationship between energy and matter.
 Gain an understanding of and apply the engineering design process.
 Gain an understanding of and apply aspects of the scientific method.
 Begin to appreciate the influence and limitations of science with consideration for
ethical issues.
 Demonstrate a positive attitude towards the use of scientific language.
 Demonstrate positive interpersonal skills to foster good working relationships.

Skills: Investigate, communicate, think critically (analyse, infer), manipulate, record,

observe, collaborate, develop explanations
Key Vocabulary: usage, storage, disposal, safety
Resources: First Step in Science Year 6, Mission Science Book 6, video, multimedia
projector, laptop

Learning Outcomes: Recognize correct and safe ways of using, storing and disposing of
materials and household items.
Content:
● Many materials have substances that can cause harm if they are not handled and used
carefully with great care.
● Symbols are important on labels as they give you visual, easily understood
information that alerts you to dangerous ingredients in the containers or packages.
● Warnings and words of caution on labels of all materials must be obeyed and
followed to ensure correct and safe use.
● Fuels, fertilizers, pesticides, paints and most cleaning products that are used in your
homes, schools and factories can contain hazardous materials.
● A hazardous material or substance is one that can be harmful to humans, other
organisms and the environment, if not used correctly and stored safely.
● Every chemical substance should be properly labelled with its name, instructions for
how it is to be handled, used and stored.
● You should read the label on chemicals to ensure that you are using them correctly
and in a safe manner.
Day One

Objectives: Students will:

● Identify correct and safe ways of using, storing, and disposing of materials and
household items.
● Work co-operatively in groups at given task.

Activities
Engage
Students will view the following pictures which will be used to facilitate a discussion.
What is happening in the pictures?
When we do these activities at home, what are some of the things that we use?
Have you ever noticed anything in particular on some of the containers that we use with
cleaning products? If so, what? Do you notice any message or symbol in particular? (If
online the teacher can use an appropriate online tool to present the image for all students.)
Students will observe the picture of the household item below. What information is given on
the label?

Students will work corporately in groups of four and use the checklist below to indicate
the information given on the label for the item in the picture above.

Name of Warning Expiry Instructions Instructions Instructions

material symbol date for use for storage for disposal

They will then tell why they think it is important to have labels on containers.

Explore
Students will be given stickers of four different hazardous symbols, they will be asked to
place it on their shirt for everyone to see (if online, stickers will be placed on a
jamboard/whiteboard/padlet).

Explain
Students will describe the symbols and explain where they have seen them if they had. They
will use a chart with safety symbols to engage in group discussion.
1. What do the symbols represent?
2. What Material/Product would you see these symbols?
3. Why do you think they are placed on some containers?
4. What is meant by household safety?
5. What do the following words mean? safety, hazardous, toxic, storing, and

disposing.

Students will watch video clips on safe ways of using and storing household materials.

Students will work in groups, to discuss what was observed in the videos and then list some
materials/items that are most hazardous and why? (Materials are hazardous based on how
they are used, stored or disposed of. Symbols on the materials tell how harmful/hazardous
the materials are.)
Elaborate
Students will be engaged in a question-and-answer session.
1. What is some information that may be given on labels found on household items?
2. Why do you think that labels should be read carefully?
3. How can you ensure that materials are used correctly?
4. How can you ensure materials are stored properly?
5. Why is it important to use household items with care?
6. Why is it important to store household items properly?
7. Why do you think most harmful chemicals print on their products- ‘Keep out Of
Reach of Children!’
8. How can these materials harm us?

The teacher will clarify that: You can be harmed by incorrectly using them:
 Ingestion, including accidental ingestion by drinking, eating or smoking when a
substance is on your hands or on the utensil being used.
 Breathing dust or fumes (inhalation).
 Contact with skin or eyes.

Evaluate
● Students will design/create a product to include its proper usage, storage and safety
handling procedures.

They will be required to name the object, give instructions for use and storage, include
any warning signs (hazard symbols), and the expiration date for their product.

● Students will use various methods of presentation to explain the question: How do
you safely use and store hazardous household products? Students may use drawing,
role-play or other ways to demonstrate.

Extended Learning: Students will collect a variety of labels from household items and
examine them for instructions for use, warning signs (hazard symbols), expiration date,
ingredients, storage and disposal. They will prepare a checklist and record the information on
the different types of products. At the next lesson, students will discuss and present the
importance of each type of information, paying special attention to use, storage and disposal.
Students will view the video for additional information. https://www.youtube.com/watch?

Day Two

Objectives: Students will:

● evaluate how the disposal of selected materials affects the environment.
● assess the impact of different materials on the society.

Activities
Engage
Students will review and explain concepts from the previous lesson.
● Students will read a cartoon on page 198 of science text- First Steps in Science 6. The
cartoon is about Jared dumping a cell phone in the garbage.

Students will think and tell. Will the cell phone made of plastic and containing batteries just
rot after disposal?
They will be invited to observe a slideshow presentation with the below pictures (students in
face to face will go to page 199 of First Steps in Science Textbook)
Students will be asked to list at least six materials that they see in the pictures, after which
they will say how these materials can affect the environment. Discussion will ensue and the
teacher will clarify all misconceptions. Students will tell if they have any idea how the items
may be disposed of properly?

Explore

Pupils will view video clips on how the disposal of some materials (eg. cell phones, plastic,
batteries etc.) may affect the environment.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1zd7wNVCS8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvW2HwFcwKY

Explain
After watching the video, they will explain how improperly disposing of the different
materials listed below can affect the environment: batteries, plastic, etc.

Elaborate

They will also read information in text on improper disposal of garbage and effect on the
environment (page 202 of text).

From reading, students will tell why waste materials should be disposed of properly.

Evaluate
● Students will assess the advantages and disadvantages of different materials in the
environment in a tabulated form.

batteries
cell phones
Metal
