History of water pollution
Water and air pollution have altered the course of the earth’s history.
Along with amazing technological advances, the Industrial Revolution
of the mid-19th century introduced new sources of air and water
pollution. By the middle of the 20th century, the effects of these
changes were beginning to be felt in countries around the world.
The history of polluted water goes back centuries. In the 1300s, the
Black Death started to spread through Europe. This disease was not
caused by the unsanitary conditions, but these conditions provided the
perfect environment for this disease to thrive.
Water and air pollution in U.S. urban areas continued to increase well
into the 20th century. The Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio, which
flows into Lake Erie, became so polluted that the water erupted into

flames! The first fire occurred in 1936, when a spark from a blowtorch
ignited floating debris and oils.

Water Pollution and Land
Water pollution is the addition of unwanted substances to the sources of water. Example river, lake, ocean, dams, swamp
CAUSES OF WATER POLLUTION:
• Mining activities due to the exploitation of minerals when rain falls it sweeps the soil to the source of water resulting in
pollution.
• Disposal of untreated sewage (effluent) into the water bodies from various sources e.g. Industrial wastes or domestic
wastes.
• Dumping of waste from the industries into the water bodies from various sources e.g. industrial waste.

• Oil spills from the leaking oil containers of pipes during the transportation of such raw materials
• Some chemicals and other waste from the farms can get into the water bodies through the surface run-off.
• Volcanic eruption, Eruption of magma on the surface could lead to water pollution because it can flow to the source of
water.
