Topic:              Meals for Infants

Infancy is the first year of life and the period of most rapid growth after birth. As a toddler,
humans develop motor skills, such as the ability to walk, and communication skills. Adolescence is an
important period in terms of physical, mental, emotional, and social changes.

Objectives:

1.      Provide nutritional base for rapid growth and development of the child during the first year of life

2.      Establish the foundation for good food habits and attitudes

Evaluation:

1.      An eight month old baby girl, who weighs 7 kgs. The baby is receiving breast milk and
complimentary feeding. Make sample recipes of nutritious meals for infants.

Questions for Discussion:


1. What are some nutritional concerns during infancy?
Avoid cow's milk before age 1 because it lacks essential nutrients and is indigestible by infants.
Honey should not be given to infants under the age of one because it may contain bacteria that
might cause botulism in them.

2.      What do infants need in their diet?

 Baby needs to eat regularly throughout the day in little portions of soft, nutritious food because
they have a small stomachs. Feed your child a variety of foods every day, focusing on animal
foods (dairy, eggs, meat, fish, and poultry), fruits, and vegetables in addition to grains and
tubers.
