CHAPTER ONE
GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO FIELD ATTACHMENT

1.0 Introduction
This chapter presents the background to the internship exercise, objectives of the
internship programme, background of the organization and the activities of the organization and
its clients.

1.1 Background to the Internship Exercise

Internship is a practical course that enables the student to apply what he or she learnt in the class
theoretically into practical part. The intention of the internship exercise was basically to
introduce the student to a supervised training in order to apply theoretical knowledge into
practical work in the working environment. It also intended to offer the student an opportunity to
gain relevant work experience for career development purposes and also get familiar with the
organization environment and culture. At Uganda Red Cross Society where the student obtained
a placement, they deal much in humanity and the student have been accorded well-deserved
training that is relevant to her profession. The student have been engaged in different activities
such as administering first aid during emergency situations, empowering youth for self-
development, disseminating information about common diseases i.e. HIV, cholera, Malaria &
TB, Maternal and child health promotion, sanitation and environmental health promotion, blood
donor mobilization and recruitment. The said activities which the student successfully undertook
in different environments not only helped the intern gain hands on experience and skills but also
motivate and inspire the student to continue working with people of different cultures and
diversities.
1.2 Objectives of the Internship Programme

1. To introduce the student to work in applied settings so that she becomes familiar with the
organization environment and culture.
2. To offer student an opportunity to gain relevant work experience for career development
purposes.
3. To help the student gain understanding of the profession as practiced.

1
1.3 Background of the Organization
The Red Cross Movement started as a result of war on the 24 th June 1859 when the Austrian troops

had occupied the Northern part of Italy. The Italians wanted to get their independence and decided to

seek military assistance from the French.

On that fateful day of the 24th June 1859, the Italians attacked the Austrians in their base and they

went into a large scale war, the Italians fighting alongside the French against the occupying

Australians.

It was during that same period that Dunant a Swiss businessman had planned his journey to meet the

emperor Napoleon III in France. He found that war had just ended and had lasted for 16 hours and

within that short time 15,000 soldiers were left dead and 25,000 were wounded. He decided to

mobilize women and children to provide first aid to the wounded while taking notes about the

information of where the soldiers had come from. And after that he decided to abandon his journey

and went back to his country in Switzerland where he wrote a book called “THE MEMORY OF

SOLFERINO” which he completed in 1862.

In that book he had two ideas namely

I. Proposal for countries to have national relief societies which are impartial in nature and

character that can identify, recruit and train volunteers during peace times so that in Situation

of emergency, those are the volunteers who can provide the necessary humanitarian

assistance.

II. Countries should come up with some set of laws which they can agree upon and ratify so that

these laws can be used to regulate the use of weapons during warfare.

After completing the book, he distributed it to different people like Philanthropists, some lawyers,

generals and doctors but it caught the attention of one very powerful man who was the president of

the Geneva welfare society who was called Gustavo Moynier. The gentleman looked for Henry
2
Dunant and asked him to form a committee office members which formed an International

Committee for the war wounded in February 1862 and also decided to strategize to see how to meet

the president of Switzerland at that time to convince him to call a meeting of heads of state so that

those matters that were in Solferino could be discussed which was a success in October 1863 where a

diplomatic conference of 16 heads of state met in Geneva Switzerland. They debated on those issues

and agreed to identify this relief institution and it was done through the reverse of the Swiss flag

which was a white cross on a red background which gave birth to the Red Cross on a white

background and was adopted in 1864.

That is what gave birth to the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Uganda Red Cross Society is the leading voluntary humanitarian Organization in Uganda. Since its

inception in 1939 as a small women’s emergency organization, Uganda Red Cross society has

developed over the years into a formidable well-respected humanitarian agency. In 1941, it became a

branch of the British Red Cross. In 1964, the Uganda Red Cross society was recognized by ‘Act of

Parliament of Uganda’ as an auxiliary to the government of Uganda in provision of humanitarian

services. In 1965, it became a member of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent

Movement.

The Uganda Red Cross society operates through 51 branch offices spanning the whole of Uganda.

National Society has over 360,000 registered members and volunteers, with one and half million

beneficiaries of its interventions. As a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent

Movement comprising of the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC) and the International

Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Uganda Red Cross society works with several partners in the

execution of its mission. These include the government of Uganda, Corporate bodies; United Nations

Agencies, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and partner Red Cross National Societies. Over

the years, Uganda Red Cross society has witnessed an increase in the number of partners and
3
partnerships not only nationally but internationally including private and civil Society Organizations.

The number of community served by Uganda Red Cross society has also tremendously increased, as

well as the scope of activities to meet the overgrowing needs of the vulnerable people in Uganda.

vegetables, clothes, soap alone respectively and put in different sacks and the perishable were put in
the baskets to avoid them from being damage.

12
CHAPTER THREE

LESSONS LEARNT, EXPERINECES AND SKILLS GAINED

3.0 Introduction

This chapter presents the major lessons learnt, and are discussed in order of knowledge, skills
gained, relevance of the theories learnt in class to the internship exercise, how the student intend
to use the new things learned for professional development, student’s contribution to the
organization as well as problems identified or encountered during the internship.

3.1 Lessons learnt

• Through the first aid training that student went through, she obtained knowledge on how
to administer first aid. For example, the student is now aware of how to attend to victims
of heart attack, heat stroke, distress, choking, burns, diabetic emergency, broken bone,
bleeding, asthma attack, allergies, head injury, poisoning, epilepsy, strain and
stings/bites.
• Blood donor mobilization and recruitment exercise helped the student gain knowledge on
who is supposed to donate, why donating and how to donate blood.
• Through the road safety training that student went through, she gained knowledge on
different road safety signs like speed limit sign, no U-turn sign and yield signs among
others.
• The student obtained knowledge about the history of Red Cross, what it does, how it
sources its fund and its different emblems and there meaning for example the Red
Crystal, the Red Crescent and the Red Cross.
• The community service and hygiene promotion exercise the student conducted in
different places for example in market areas like Kalerwe helped her to obtain
entrepreneurship knowledge since I was exposed to different businesses people carry out
in the community.

3.2 Skills gained

First Aid skills.

I acquired first aid skills in the field during the first aid training at Uganda Red Cross Society

13
office, first aid is the immediate help given to a causality that has suddenly fallen ill before taking
him or her to the hospital

Self-awareness skill
Through community service, hygiene promotion and blood donor mobilization exercise, the
student was able to appreciate her strong and weak points. Here the student discovered that she is
good at influencing and inspiring people to do what she want them to do.

Coping with emotional skills

During road safety awareness, dissemination, blood donor mobilization, community service and
condom use sensitization, the student was abused by some clients (community member) most
especially the bodaboda cyclists who kept on uttering annoying comments but the student was
able to effectively manage her emotions.

Leadership skills

Through the leadership role that was accorded to the student for example during community
service and hygiene promotion at Kazo Parish, the student was able gain skills of inspiring others
to work towards achieving organization goals.

Assertive skills

The engagement in organization activities like dissemination, condom drives, and community
service and blood donor mobilization helped the student to develop assertive skill where she
could openly express her feelings in a respective manner.

Skills of friendship formation

During internship with the organization, the student was able to form friends for support and
guidance.

Effective Communication skills

The activities the student was involved in like dissemination of information about Red Cross,
blood donor mobilization, community service and condom drives helped the student learn how to
communicate effectively.

14
Skills of knowing and living with others

While working with the organization, the student learnt how to co-live with other members
within and outside the organization.

Skills of curiosity and consultation

The student learnt to appreciate what she do not know and seek knowledge from someone who
knows.

3.3 Relevance of the theories learnt in class to the internship exercise

Local government and service delivery studied in class at the institute helped the intern to
convey developmental ideas to the community for example; the intern was able to disseminate
information on common diseases such as malaria, cholera, HIV/AIDS among others with the
intension of promoting good welfare in the community.

The communication skills studied in class theoretically helped the intern communicate
effectively with community members while implementing activities like cholera sensitization,
blood donor mobilization, membership recruitment, and road safety awareness exercise and
sanitation and hygiene promotions.

The management of social services studied in class was relevant in the implementation of
community service for it guided the intern on how to engage the community in the
implementation of the exercise.

The community mobilization theory studied at the institute was relevant in the implementation of
activities like blood donor mobilization and community service. The theory made the intern to be
in position to mobilize community members to conduct community service and also to donate
blood. This is because the intern was equipped with mobilization skills.

Gender and Minority interest studied in class guided the intern in the implementation of activities
like environmental health and hygiene promotions. This was through inculcating the spirit of
voluntarism in the intern.

15
Social learning theory assumes that Modeling and imitation are processes where people can learn
new behavior or change their current behavior by observing the behavior of others. Modeling
behavior can have three distinct effects on observing Individuals. When someone engages in a
behavior, it may invoke an imitative response in which observing individuals repeat the same
behavior, strengthen or weaken a previously learned behavior, or prompt a previously acquired
response behavior (Bandura & Walters, 1963). The theory was very influential in our
intervention more especially in areas where we conducted community service. This is because
the activity relied heavily on demonstrations which gave the community opportunity to imitate
what they had observed thus the theory was in line with the activity.

3.4 How the student intends to utilize the skills learnt for professional development.

The entrepreneurship skills the student obtained during community service, she intends to use
it in setting up businesses like agricultural production and trade.

The student also intends to use the first aid knowledge acquired to help those in emergencies.

The student intends to use Effective communication skills in facilitations this will help her
maintain and improve on my communication skills.

The skills of friendship formation and knowing and living with others, will help the student
relate effectively with people in the community, at place of work and at home as well as in
networking thus professional development.

3.5 Personal Contribution to the organization

The student contributed to the funding of the organization through paying first aid training fee of
130,000

The student also helped in saving lives through administering first aid during emergencies.

The intern helped in the promotion of heath through conducting blood donor mobilizations and
recruitment.

16
Through community service and hygiene promotion exercises the student engaged in, she helped
in the promotion of health thus saving lives.

The student also helped in the promotion of road safety awareness, through road safety
awareness exercises. This also helped to save lives of the road users.

Likewise through condom use sensitization exercise the student was involved in at Kabuusu, she
helped in combating sexually transmitted diseases like HIV/AIDs. This also helped in the
promotion of health.

3.6 Challenges encountered during field attachment exercise

3.6.1 Problems Encountered Within the Organization

Working with new people

In first days of work, the student had challenges of mixing up with the staff but nonetheless she
was able to overcome the challenge.

Abrupt programs

Since Uganda Red Cross Society is an emergency humanitarian organization, some programs
were abrupt thus making the student spend beyond her daily budget.

Absence of supervisor due to official engagements

The student’s supervisor would at some time have official engagements leading to limited time
with the student yet she always needed him for consultancy and work allocation. Nevertheless,
whenever he was around gave the student full attention and guidance.

Poor time management

Although there was a policy for time management at the organization like daily recording of time
in and out, the student noticed that some employees as well as interns report late at work. This
affected daily programs.

Weak security

17
The student noticed that the security officers at the organization are not strict since they used not
to verify what was in the people’s bags thus being negligent to security issues.

3.6.2 Problems Encountered Outside the Organization (With Clients)

In the community, the student was regarded as a medical practitioner yet she had insufficient
knowledge about health issues this made student vulnerable to the questions posed by some
clients.

Hostility of some community members

Some community members were hostile as they used abusive language during our interaction
with them most especially the cyclists who kept on uttering annoying comments. However to
overcome the challenge the student applied the social work principle such as acceptance and
controlled her emotions.

Language barrier

During blood donor mobilization exercise, dissemination and sensitization on condom use, the
student found it challenging to communicate to those who couldn’t understand English and
Luganda. Nevertheless the student called for assistance from the team members thus overcoming
the challenge.

18
CHAPTER FOUR:
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

4.0 Summary of Findings

The internship training the student carried out at Uganda Red Cross Society- Kampala North
Branch from 16th January to 10th February 2023 intended to help the student apply theoretical
knowledge into practical work in the working environment. It also intended to offer the student
an opportunity to gain relevant work experience for career development purposes and also get
familiar with the organization environment and culture.

Uganda Red Cross Society not only gave the student a well-deserved training of first aid to the
student, but also engaged the student in different activities within and outside the organization,
the activities included administering first during emergency situations, sanitation and
environmental health promotion, blood donor mobilization and recruitment, dissemination of
information on common disease such as cholera malaria & TB, road safety awareness among
others. The mentioned activities added a lot of value to the student and made more sense of what
the student studied at the university.

The organization also enabled the student to acquire relevant knowledge and skills like first aid
knowledge, knowledge on road safety, knowledge on blood donor recruitment drives as well as
knowledge on health and hygiene promotion not disregarding skills like effective communication
skills, self-awareness skills, curiosity and consultation skills, leadership skills, assertive skills,
friendship formation skills, skills of knowing and living with others as well as skills of coping
with emotions.

Despite the substantial benefits the student obtained while working with the organization, the
student experienced some challenges these include the absence of the supervisor due to
official engagements, poor time management by some colleagues, abrupt programs and
provocative community members.

The student therefore, recommended the organization to plan in advance to redesign the schedule
for the interns and appreciate the work done by the interns through facilitating them where
possible.
19
4.1 Conclusion

It can be concluded that working with Uganda Red Cross Society mainly Kampala North Branch
has been a valuable experience for the student since the organization gave him a conducive
atmosphere that enabled the student to acquire relevant knowledge and skills like first aid
knowledge, knowledge on road safety, knowledge on blood donor recruitment drives, knowledge
on health and hygiene promotion as well as skills like effective communication skills, self-
awareness skills, curiosity and consultation skills, leadership skills, assertive skills, friendship
formation skills, skills of knowing and living with others as well as skills of coping with
emotions. However the challenges, limitations and disappointments like absence of the
supervisor due to official engagements, poor time management by some colleagues, abrupt
programs and provocative community members the student faced while working with the
organization were disheartening but the student strongly believe that the organization will rectify
them with proper measures and policies.

4.2 Recommendations

To Makerere institute for social development

There is a need for the institute to create links with organizations so as to smoothen the students’
process of obtaining fieldwork placements.

The student recommends the institute to introduce a policy where students are supposed to
contribute a small percentage internship fee on quarter, semester or annual basis such that this
money is refunded to them during internship period for use. This will help to address the issue of
students’ financial constraints during internship.
To Uganda Red Cross Society- Kampala North Branch

The student recommends the organization to plan in advance to redesign the schedule for interns
and discuss how to appreciate the work they do by facilitating them where possible.

There is a need for the organization to put more emphasis on dissemination since the community
is less aware of the real activities of Uganda Red Cross Society and the services it offers.

The student recommends the agency to provide free first aid training to whoever is willing to be
trained this will help to increase the number of first aiders in the country hence saving lives.
