ALBATEX® PS-35 pH slider

DYEING AUXILIARIES
USES

Robust pH control during dyeing of PA and WO fibers and their blends with almost all dye classes
at all stages of processing at boil and at HT conditions on a variety of dyeing equipment.
ALBATEX PS-35 pH slider is recommended for any dyeing system that requires a pH shift from
neutral to acidic to ensure optimum build up and level dyeing.
ALBATEX PS-35 is applied for carpet by exhaustion dyeing process.

Characteristics Benefits

• Gradually reduces pH as • Uniform build up and leveling of dyes hence

temperature rises. excellent and reproducible surface levelness.
Promotes full and controlled exhaustion which
ensures batch to batch reproducibility.

• pH can be reduced from 7 to • Most required dye classes can be dyed with the
desired acidic pH. pH slider to prevent exhaustion from proceeding
too rapidly even with polyamide qualities that
have high affinity for the dye. The danger of
unlevelness of pale shades is minimized.

PROPERTIES

Chemical constitution Preparation of formats

Ionic character Nonionic

pH of 5% solution 5 to 8*

Specific gravity at 20°C About 1

Physical form Clear, colorless liquid

General stability Stable in hard water, to acids, to alkalis and electrolytes in

usual amounts.

Storage stability Stable for 1 year at 20°C in closed containers not affected by
heat or cold.
* Keep drums and containers tightly closed. The pH of the
concentrated product is sensitive to accidentally introduced
water and humidity. The entrance of water into stored drums
or containers must be avoided. Failure to do so can decrease
the pH below the value of 5.

Compatibility Can be used together with anionic, amphoteric and nonionic

products if carefully applied.

Ecology/toxicology The usual hygiene and safety rules for handling chemicals
should be observed in storage, handling and use. The
product must not be swallowed.

APPLICATIONS

ALBATEX PS-35 is added to the dyebath at the start of the exhaust dyeing cycle.

Dissolving / diluting
Please mind to avoid the entrance of any water into the product during metering. The scoops must
be completely dry! Keep drums and containers before and after metering tightly closed.
ALBATEX PS-35 is added to the dyebath directly after all other chemicals but before the dye
addition. It can also be easily diluted with cold water.

Required amount for PA fibers

The required amount depends on various factors (e.g. amount of dyes, pH and
hardness of water, additional chemicals, pH of substrate, liquor ratio) but will normally
lie within the limits given below. Preliminary trials should be carried out.
®
0.25–2.0 g/l ALBATEX PS-35 depending on desired final pH
Below LR of 8:1 the same amount is to be used but in % on weight of goods:
®
0.25–2.0% ALBATEX PS-35

Following is a guideline for the usage of ALBATEX PS-35 on polyamide

regarding all tested dye ranges,

LANASET®, TECTILON®, ERIOFAST®, ERIONYL® and LANACRON® N.
The end pH (see below) should correspond to the constant pH recommended in the standard
pattern cards for each dye class:

soft water (< 3°dH, pH 8.5) hard water (11°dH, pH 8.0)

ALBATEX PS-35
start pH end pH start pH end pH
0.25 g/l 7.1 4.5 7.0 5.0

1.5 g/l 6.9 3.2 6.6 3.9

2.0 g/l 6.3 3.0 6.5 3.7

The end pH is achieved after 1h boiling time.

In certain cases if required, the starting pH can be adjusted towards slightly alkaline condition with
e.g. soda ash, sodium bicarbonate or similar chemicals. The end pH will then be the same as if not
adjusted.

It is valid also for chlorinated or super-wash wool regarding all tested dye ranges, LANASET®,
LANASOL®, LANASOL®CE, LANACRON® N, and ERIONYL®.
The end pH (see below) should correspond to the constant pH recommended in our standard

*) In certain cases if required (e.g. higher amount of usage), the starting pH can be adjusted to neutral condition with e.g.
soda ash (like here done), sodium bicarbonate or similar chemicals. The end pH will then be the same as if not adjusted
separately. Higher amount of dosage is recommended for very deep shade (e.g. Navy and Black).

NOTES

ALBATEX PS-35 can be used in any system that requires a pH drift from neutral or if required from
(in case of PA) slightly alkaline to acidic.

ALBATEX PS-35 has a slow hydrolysis rate that allows a controlled exhaustion of dyestuffs
because it provides a slow release of acid in the dyebath. Therefore the danger of local over-
dosage of acid in the dye-bath is not given.

The storage stability of this product is superior then most conventional products. Compared to
different products from the market a solution of ALBATEX PS-35 is stable at 25°C for 2h without
high rate of hydrolysis.
Keep drums and containers tightly closed. The pH of the concentrated product is sensitive to
accidentally introduced water and humidity. The entrance of water into stored drums or containers
must be avoided. Failure to do so can decrease the pH below the value of 5.

Best leveling effects on PA (shade build up, coverage of barriness, migration and retardation) is
achieved in conjunction with a very good leveling agent e.g. UNIVADINE® MC. Without this leveling
agent there is no significant improvement of barriness possible.

Best coverage of barriness on PA is achieved if STABILON® NY is applied during pre-setting

process to avoid fiber damages before the exhaustion dyeing (with UNIVADINE MC) takes place.

On medium to dark shades, the degree of heating up and the start temperature for the dyeing of PA
can be increased. Therefore preliminary trials are recommended. This results in a more economical
processing.

Compared to common acids ALBATEX PS-35 is less corrosive.
