PHYSICAL SCIENCE
EXPLORING POLARITY OF MOLECULES

Objectives: Investigate the solubility and miscibility of several substances using water as the solvent. Describe what
happens at the molecular level for each set-up. Lastly, identify the polarity of substances based on the result of each set-
up.

Instructions:
1. Perform the activity on a clean area with complete materials.
2. Clean and dispose of the materials properly after the activity.
3. Document your experimentation by clearly showing your materials, process and results of each substance’ miscibility
4. Fill each cup halfway with water, then add 1 table spoon of each substance to each cup. Observe and record your
findings.
5. Upload your output in the google drive (You can only upload until 6PM today) provided including your photo
documentation in conducting the experiment.

Answer the following while doing the experiment.

1. List down the 5 liquid substances that you brought.
1.Soy Sauce 3.Cooking Oil 5.Shampoo

2. White Vinegar 4.Ethyl alcohol

2. Which of the following substances is miscible with water. Put a check on the appropriate column
SUBSTANCE MISCIBLE IMMISCIBLE

Soy Sauce /

Vinegar /

Cooking Oil /

Ethyl Alcohol /

Shampoo /

3. Why are they miscible with water? Why not? (5 points)

- We filled each cup with each water and added each substances to each cup. We saw how some of the substances
mixed well with the water, while the oil just stayed on top of the water. The reason for this is if a substance have the
same polarity with another substance, it means that they can mix at any proportion, called miscibility. But if the
structure of a substance is non polar, it will not mix well with a water because non-polar molecules only mix well with
other non-polar molecules. Water is a polar molecule, so that's why it did not mix with the oil.

4. Which of the substance are polar? Which is not? Place a check on the appropriate column
SUBSTANCE POLAR NON POLAR

Soy Sauce /

White Vinegar /

Cooking Oil /

Ethyl Alcohol /

Shampoo / /

5. What is POLARITY? (5points)

- A state or a condition of an atom or a molecule inherent in a body that exhibits opposite properties or powers in
opposite parts or directions. Polarity, in general, refers to the physical properties of compounds such as boiling point,
melting points, and their solubilities. It is also a separation of electric charge leading to a molecule or its chemical groups
having an electric dipole moment, with negatively charged end and a positively charged end.

6. How is polarity related with miscibility? Solubility? (8 points)

- Polarity has a direct effect on solubility and miscibility. Polarity is the reason why miscibility is observed between two
substances or more. It determines if they will mix or not. If two non-polar molecules are added together they will also
mix and are miscible. However, if a non- polar molecule and a polar molecule are added together, they will NOT mix
together. One of its example is the ethyl alcohol and water. The ethyl alcohol's molecules are polar, same with the
water, and that's why they are miscible. Another example is the oil and water. The oil's molecules are nonpolar, so that's
why it is immiscible with water. While in solubility, it determines similar polarities that tends to be soluble with one
another.
