1. What are the three (3) advantages and disadvantages of diode rectifiers?

B. Single Phase Uncontrolled Rectifiers

2. What is the effect of the source inductance (𝐿𝑠 ) on the output waveforms of bridge
single phase inverter?

3. Given the circuit below, supplied by a pure sinusoidal source with 𝐿𝑠 = 0 and a
constant current 𝐼𝑑 .
a) Draw the waveforms of 𝑣𝑠 , 𝐼𝑑 and 𝑖𝑠 .
b) Obtain the average and RMS values of the current through each diode as a
ratio of 𝐼𝑑 .

4. In the rectifier shown below, 𝑉𝑠 = 120 V at 60 Hz, 𝐿𝑠 = 1 mH, and 𝐼𝑑 = 10 A.

Calculate the commutation interval, 𝑢, 𝑉𝑑 , 𝑃𝑑 . What is the percentage voltage drop in
𝑉𝑑 due to 𝐿𝑠 ?

6. For how long (radians) does each diode conduct in an uncontrolled three-phase
rectifier?
7. A simplified three-phase rectifier is shown in Figure 3, obtain the average and rms
values of the current through each diode as a ratio of dc-side current 𝐼𝑑 . Show your
work.

8. Show that the effect of 𝐿𝑠 in a three-phase uncontrolled rectifier results in the drop in
𝜋
average output voltage of ∆𝑉𝑑 = 3 𝜔𝐿𝑠 𝐼𝑑 .
