DOUBLE SHEAR TEST

1. AIM:

To find the ultimate shear strength of the given material by conducting a

double shear test.

2. APPARATUS REQUIRED:
1. Compression Testing Machine.
2. Double Shear apparatus.
3. Vernier Caliper.

3. Theory:

3.1 Keywords:

Shear force: A force which is applied tangential forces which are

parallel but mutually acting in opposite'directions can be called shear

force. Any force which tends to shear off a material can be called
shear force.
Single shear: when a shear force acts at one place only, the force is
called single shear, example sharing of a rivet in a lap joint.
Double shear: when shear forces acts at two places, the forces is
called double shear, example shearing of a rivet in a double cover butt

Joint.

4. Lab test
procedure:
1. Measure the average diameter
of the given rod.
2. The specimen in the double shear assembly with proper side grips.
4.1 Observations:

4.2 Model Calculation: ristiet

Show the model calculation for cross sectional area and ultimate shear stress

of the given specimen.

4.3 Learn:

1. Assembly and arrangement in double shear bOx.

2. Principle of this test.

3. Examples where materials are subjected to single and double shear.

4. Practical use of this experiments.
3. Place the double shear assembly on the lower
platens of the compression testing
machine and lower the upper platen till the
assembly is tightly fixed between
platen.

4. Start the machine and apply the load on the double shear
assembly.
5. Note down the ultimate load at which the specimen fails.

6. Repeat the same procedure for number of specimens.

7. Calculate the ultimate shear stress using the formula given below for each
specimen and

take the average value of the ultimate shear stress.

Area of cross section of the specimen =

t di/4 mm

Ultimate shear stress

Ultimate load N/mm
2 x Area of crosS section

5. Result:

The Ultimate shear stress of the material of the given specimen is .
